Wow. That's scary. I breastfed and quickly learned to tell a hungry cry from a wet diaper cry, etc. I never had to measure. I just let my daughter decide how much to eat. I don't know how to tell them. Can you tell somebody who is really close to them (unless that's you) to have a talk with them, maybe one of your aunt's or uncle's parents or siblings. Good luck!

If she is really losing weight there may be a problem. It may be that the child cannot digest that particular formula properly. She needs to see her pediatrician. If she's just gaining slowly it may be normal for her. I would be concerned if the parents seem overly obsessed with fitness and weight or have expressed concerns about obesity. Sometimes this kind of parent will underfeed their baby to prevent obesity and cause some pretty serious problems. Babies need fat to grow their nervous system properly. Also, if mom is nursing she may not realize that breast fed babies eat more often because the milk is digested more efficiently than formula. There is an organization called La Leche League that helps with breastfeeding or the hospital where the baby was born may have a lactation consultant.

Find some way to get the baby to the doctor and offer to go along . Ask the parents in front of the doctor how much she is eating and how often they feed her. If the weight loss continues I hope the pediatrician takes a serious look at what is going on.
