Preferred Gin or Vodka.. Twist of lime or lemon for the tonic. Olive onion or lemon wedge for the martini... Shaken or stirred possible. Though why anyone wouldn't have their martini shaken is beyond me.

They have nothing to ask! You will get the house gin and the mix the bartender uses. Nothing bugs me more then when I order a Martini and the server says "vodka or gin". They seem to have no idea what a Martini is. If the customer wants something different they will state it, like "vodka Martini", " a very dry Martini" or a particular brand of gin.

for a gin and tonic you would ask what kind of gin ?
for a martini you would ask vodka or gin never assume its one or the other then you would ask up or on the rocks do they want it dirty?

They don't have to ask you anything. Unless you specify you get the house liquor. Also, unless you specify you get a gin martini, not vodka, since that's how a martini is made. You have to be specific, they don't have to ask.
