Clinical Laboatory Scientist specializing in molecular genetics. Doctors don't analyze DNA. Laboratory scientist do! We tell the doc what's wrong...he gets the big $$

The actual molecular testing is performed by a Clinical Laboratory Scientist, usually specializing in the area of Molecular Diagnostics. This person holds at minimum a B.S. degree from a University, preferably in the discipline of Medical Technology. They perform the necessary testing, arrive at the answers and refer them (usually) to a PhD Geneticist for interpretation or perhaps a Pathologist who has a fellowship in Genetics.

The American Board of Medical Genetics offers exams in clinical genetics, molecular genetics, and cytogenics plus others. Generally, one specializing in cytogenetics does DNA analysis, but molecular geneticists do this also.

I would have to agree and say it is a PhD who is doing it, a geneticist.

There is no specialty within the field of medicine that focuses specifically on doing DNA tests. Many different fields use the technology (heme/onc, surg onc, etc.).

Usually these people hold a ph.D but I believe the term is a geneticist.
