I've been working out at least 4 times per week for the past two months. Most recently, I've been working out every day by doing about 30-45 min of cardio and I lift weights, alternating legs and abs with arms. I'm not overweight, but I'm definitely closer to being overweight than underweight. I've been eating right and replacing one meal each day with a protein bar.

Yet somehow, I've managed to gain about 5 pounds. I am so frustrated!! My clothes don't fit any better and I weigh more. Is it possible that the weight I gained is muscle? Has anyone else had this much trouble?! Thanks!

i would stop eating the protein bar in place of a meal, real food is more satisfying. perhaps you are compensating at the meals you eat food at. try sticking to low calorie plain foods without sauces (to lower the sodium amount.. maybe you are retaining water) for a week and see if that helps.

You said the answer right in your question: "replacing one meal each day with a protein bar". If you're not eating enough calories, your body goes into starvation mode, and because it's afraid it's going to be a long time until your next meal, it hordes everything you eat, and you gain weight.

Keep a food diary of everything you eat for one week. You bite it, you write it. If you're eating less than 1200 calories a day, you're not eating enough. For a very active person, you might even need to eat more than that. Make sure you get enough lean protein, veggies, fruit, and dairy. Whole grain carbs (like oatmeal) will be good too.

Good luck!

Yes it is possible after football season a lot of my friends stopped lifting weights, now they look really fat and yet they all claim that they have lost wieght. I am overweight and trying to live healthier all I can do is lift weights and abs I cant run due to my leg and I have changed my diet, at first I gained 5 lbs just like you and now Ive lost that 5 plus another 10 so just keep it up and eat plenty of fruit, and drink lots of water

I hate to tell you this but as we get older our metabolism slows and it takes more excersise and less food to lose weight,a whole lot less food.
muscle weighs more than fat but sometimes we tend to eat more because we are excersising.
it could be your thyroid,a simple blood test will let you know.
as women it would take very heavy continuous lifting for our muscles to bulge like a man.
Most women weightlifters take steroids to get that look.
eat half as much as you eat now and see what happens.

Gaining more muscle makes you gain more weight. Doesn't mean you are getting more overweight. That weight is just from gaining more muscle.

you will gain muscle weight from exercising but your measurements should go down in certain areas. it is most likely your diet that is the culprit. drop your daily calories a little and see if it helps.

Things get worse before they get better...
I would cut down on the weightlifting for a while and up the cardio .
