Matthew 27:3-5
When Judas, his betrayer, saw that he was condemned, he repented and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders, saying, "I have sinned in betraying innocent blood." They said, "What is that to us? See to it yourself." And throwing down the pieces of silver in the temple, he departed; and he went and hanged himself.

Acts 1:18
Now this man [Judas] bought a field with the reward of his wickedness; and falling headlong he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out.

Matthew said that Judas committed suicide by hanging himself while Luke said Judas fell off a precipice. Note also that Matthew said Judas gave the money back to the chief priests while Luke said that Judas used the money to buy a plot of land.

Which is it? Did Judas throw the money down in the temple, or buy land with it?

A bit of confusion is understandable. Matthew 27:5 reports that Judas hanged himself. But Acts 1:18 states: “Pitching head foremost he noisily burst in his midst and all his intestines were poured out.” (Yuck)

Matthew appears to deal with the method of the attempted suicide. Acts describes the results. Viewed together then, seems Judas tried to hang himself over some cliff, but either the rope or the tree limb broke so that he plunged down and burst open on the rocks below. (Yuck) Quite conceivable considering the topography around Jerusalem.

As for who bought the land, seems the priests bought it, but since Judas provided the money, it could be credited to him. In this connection, Dr. A. Edersheim pointed out: “It was not lawful to take into the Temple-treasury, for the purchase of sacred things, money that had been unlawfully gained. In such cases the Jewish Law provided that the money was to be restored to the donor, and, if he insisted on giving it, that he should be induced to spend it for something for the public weal [well-being]. . . . By a fiction of law the money was still considered to be Judas’, and to have been applied by him in the purchase of the well-known ‘potter’s field.’”

Both; Judas threw the money down onto the Temple floor and left; there was no way those Priests could let him live. Judas was hung and cut from his adams apple all the way down to his privates, and his insides gushed out.
Yes, Judas did "buy the land"; he bought the land, in that when he threw the pieces of silver down, the Priests collected it and said they could not use it because it was the cost of blood, so they bought the potters field with the money.
You are not understanding figures of speech in the Bible.
Judas bought the potters field not by physically going and purchasing the land, but by the money that he threw down, get it?
Oh, and Judas did not commit suicide; he had quite a bit of help in his death.

I believe that he was so tormented about what he had done that he did go and hang himself like Matthew wrote. The body then could have fell to the ground and burst open. There is a tree referred to as "the Judas tree" that represents Judas Iscariot hanging himself from a tree. So, both men are probably giving accurate accounts on what was told to them.
In response to your question, Judas threw the money down in the temple, but the priest were not allowed to use murder money, so they voted and bought land with it.

Christian apologists (those who try to explain the problems of contradiction in the bible) claim that Judas died by hanging from a tree, and then as the branch broke off, his body fell headlong into the field where his guts burst open.

They also claim that Judas bought the field with other monies that were different from the 30 pieces of silver he scattered in the temple. Apparently Judas was a rich man of his own right.

From a realistic perspective, it doesn't seem logical that these passages cannot be mutually exclusive. However, when one believes with faith, one can accept most anything.

Yes, that is a scary thought.

Well, Kimmy, you gotta remember that the Gospels were written between75 and 125 years after the event and the Apostles what were still alive weren't exactly in good shape mentally.

Now the way I recall it, Judas told the cops to "Round up the usual suspects," tossed the bottle of Vichy water in the trash and went off with Rick to join the Resistance. Beginning of a beautiful friendship, that was. 'Course that was a long time ago and I'm a little shaky on the details.

Seems to me Judas was surprised at the way things turned out. I remember his saying to me, "Boy, they're in trouble now. Just you wait and see what he does!"

Just a guess here... maybe he bought the land with the actual 30 pieces of silver that he got for his bribe. Later, feeling guilty, he could have brought 30 other pieces of silver back to the chief priests.

He hung himself... The Bible does not contradict itself! Matthew 27:5-8 says, "So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself. the govt clergymen picked up the money and reported, ‘it extremely is a criminal offense to place this into the treasury, on account that is blood money.’ so as that they desperate to apply the money to purchase the potter's container as a burial place for foreigners. because of the fact of this it extremely is been referred to as the sphere of Blood to on the instant." Acts a million:18-19 says, "With the reward he have been given for his wickedness, Judas offered a container; there he fell headlong, his physique burst open and all his intestines spilled out. everybody in Jerusalem heard approximately this, so as that they referred to as that container of their language Akeldama, it is, container of Blood." that's right? Did Judas carry close himself or did he fall? Did Judas purchase the sphere or did the clergymen purchase the sphere? Judas hung himself in the potters container (Matthew 27:5) and then after his physique decayed and bloated, of course the rope broke and he burst into products on the land of the potters container (Acts a million:18-19). This passage presumes Judas' putting, as a guy falling down in a container does not bring about his physique bursting open. basically decomposition and a fall from a top might desire to reason a physique to burst open. whilst Judas threw the thirty products of silver down, the clergymen took the money and used it to purchase the potter’s container (Matthew 27:7), not understanding that Judas became going to hold close himself there. Judas won't have offered the sphere himself, in spite of the shown fact that it became the money Judas gained for betraying Jesus that offered the sphere.

It's "allegory" & "mystery": allegoric mystery to solve in time lest all perish by law instead of none perish by grace. Reading on in Mt 27:7 we learn chief priests bought the field (the field is the world in parable explained as being allegory). You have to seek and find the allegory clues to solve the mystery. Eg: Bursting speaks of putting new wine (grace) in old bottles (laws). Middle or Midst speaks of one like Son of Man (should repent: Numbers 23:19) in the midst of seven candlestick churches. It also speaks of between God and Man, trying to mediate Grace and Law, which isn't possible. When seated with Christ(is the end of the law) above: higher than the heavens, there is nothing to mediate; for "seated" denotes the law vs grace matter is forever settled in Christ. Christ is our peace who abolished the law, as if it's dung.

POINT: if it's crap(dung), flush it(law) & make a clean wipe.

Holy Bible does NOT think for you,
rather it DOES make you think,
so that in the end you don't stink.

The GRACE of our Lord Jesus Christ with youy all. Amen.

Judas returned the money but they didn't put the money back in the treasurer but bought a potter's field. Just different viewpoints on a true story.

I'd say the priests used the money he threw back at them (his money, to be precise) to buy the field. And it sounds like he fastened the rope to a tree on the edge of a precipice and jumped over. Yuck.

Here's a good link:
