My sister has pet parakeet, which is the most annoying thing in the world. It squeeks and squaks and screams and chirps all day starting from like 8am (it wakes me up) until it gets dark out. Is there any way to punish a bird to make it stop screaming at random times? It just does what it pleases whenever it pleases, there has to be another way?

You do not need to punish the bird. Rather cover the cage with a blanket or towel. Bird behavior is usually directed by light. When it is dark, they sleep/stay quiet. When it is light, they make noise etc. You can extend your sleep by keeping them covered at night. That way, the rising sun will not get them up...which in turn gets you up.

you CAN NOT punish a bird. Their brains do not understand punishment, so don't even try. Don't cover the cage because this will cause the bird to make noise at night when the cage is covered. This bird just wants attention. By talking to it to make it shut up or even walking over to put the cover on, it's getting the attention it wants and you're actually causing the behavior. IGNORE the bird. When it makes noise, shut the lights off, leave the room until the bird has been silent for a full 10 minutes. Then come back and give the bird attention, treats, and this will teach him that he has to be quiet to get attention from you. It works EVERY time!

This is part of bird ownership--putting up with normal bird behavior. The bird sounds like an active healthy parakeet. You cannot get mad at it or punish it for being what it is--a bird! Try putting the cage out on a screened porch for part of the day when it isn't too hot or cold. If you can't tolerate the bird, think about a new home. Do not punish (abuse) this bird--it will not understand and only become afraid. Covering a bird cage during the day is not a good quality of life for a bird.

It's normal behaviour: Is your sister's parakeet kept in a cage?
You can quieten the bird by putting a sheet over a cage but it won't address the root of the problem.
Most birds respond to cages just like humans do - they turn insane from boredom and die. It needs to be kept outside in an aviary or at least let out of it's cage for several hours every day.

I agree with the last answer, it sounds like the bird gets no attention throughout the day. I have read that parakeets squak when they want attention. So if the bird squaks all day long, someone should play with it.

it sounds like no one is giving this bird any attention at all !!!
Does it ever get time out of the cage???? I've got a budgie parakeet and he's NOT like that, he'll chirp off and on all day he'll chrip and screech but it's not loud and he'll even chirp so much and so fast that it sounds like theres at least 5 other parakeets in his cage when it's just Him His cage door gets opened every day when i get up ( in the summer its around 10am during school its 5:30 am and doesnt get closed till i go to bed summer is 2-3am school months is 9pm) he has free range of the house but he perfers to stay on top of his cage on his Play area
Sounds like ya'll should of thought hard and long and did alot of reserach before you got a bird, it sounds like it's stuck in a cage all day with no interaction and birds need interaction, love and attention
I cover my bird up every night, at the same time, there is times he's alseep before i even cover him up, and he's quiet all night long, and even after i uncover him , He's a quiet bird in general he likes to chirp to the outside birds, and since i've got my Quaker they'll chit chat to eatchother but its still not annoying
Perhaps if you guys wont give him the attention he needs ya'll need to think about re-homing him and finding him a home where he'll get the love and attention and human interaction that he needs

Fact: Captive birds do not understand punishment - Only Praise.

Fact:All birds make their natural sounds in mornings and through out the day.

Ask your sister if she would cover the bird at night for bed.
Then uncover the birds cage in the morning.

Do Not keep the bird covered more than eight hours at night and DONOT cover it because his sounds bother you.

Imagine your music bothers him alot too. smile-:))

Birds do not respond to punishment. It only makes them mistrust you. Postive reinforcement is the only way to properly train a bird, but you can't train a bird not to be a bird.

U can buy the parakeet a partner and maybe it will make it be quiet, and maybe it might be flirting or mating season. Check wikipedia or google for more info.

Leave that bird alone----! It deserves a happy life, and you should appreciate the joy it brings to the household.
