compassion, and a swinging brick for a heart. Yet other people are so compassionate and kind, that they would go out their way to help anyone.

Too bad I'm not a psychiatrist. I think that most people become the way they are because of the way they've been treated throughout their lives. I think it also has to do with how they themselves were dealt wih. They can't use that as an excuse though, it's like saying " I was in a car accident years ago and now I wont get into a car". It's illogical and unreasonable. People are, for the most part, exactly the way they want to be.

People do not have a swinging brick for a heart, they just need to heal their own pain to be able to show other people compassion

Some people are born with kindness, love and compassion but unfortunately are born with sensitive glass hearts and the toughness of the world smashes it.

It's not because of their religion. Most religious people would rather teenagers get pregnant or die of AIDS rather than educate them about birth control. Or that third world country citizens get AIDS or end up having abortions because they won't tell them that to use condoms would ease their suffering. They would rather kill doctors at abortion clinics, see women die of medical complications due to at risk pregnancies, suffer emotional agonies over carrying a rapist's child or die at the hands of a backstreet abortionist rather than have a legal procedure that is none of their business. Compassion is lacking in these people, so much for religion.

It depends on which values they were influenced by, or whether they they chose not to follow in the footsteps of people that had no compassion. thus learning because of other peoples mistakes.

I believe it mostly boils down to degrees of empathy. Some people seem non-empathic and inherently selfish - the narcissists. Others seem to understand and empathise, and tend not to be so -self-focused.

In my experience, those among my family and friends who are the meanest/lying/selfish group tend to be the most insecure/suspicious. They also seem to lack (at least a large degree) the abstract mental functions of empathy or self-reflection.

Just my observations.
