I believe you can actually drown because all the energies are being spent on the digestion process, and if you exert yourself trying to swim, your system might crash. But is that a myth or what? Please enlighten me!

You have partial myth. The warning is correct, that rationale is invalid. The system crash idea is separate and relates to total muscle failure (over exertion).

For about an hour after eating, while you are still in the digestion process, any extreme exertion can cause 1) abdominal cramps and 2) vomiting.

If the cramps are of sufficient severity, your ability to swim is reduced significantly. In many circumstances, any reduction in ability is sufficient to cause an emergency.

The whole vomiting issue - try swimming in deep water while you vomit. Can't be done. :-)

I think it has more to do with cramping rather than energy being spent on aiding digestion. If you got a terrible cramp while swimming you would have a hard time being able to swim which could cause drowning. Thats why I was always told don't go into the water within an hour of eating.

Maybe, but the 30-minute rule is an old wives' tale.

The logic is that after eating, your body diverts blood and other resources to your stomach and intestines to digest the food. So, you might have a cramp if also having to exert energy swimming. But you can get cramps for many other reasons.

The way to prevent drowning is to NEVER swim alone, know your skills/limits and if possible swim under supervision of a lifeguard.

The possibility exists for a bad cramp , in which case you might not be able to get out of the water - which could pose a problem .

depends on how you react to cramps and their severity --
personally, I stay out of the water for the recommended
hour cause I ain't partial to belly aches.
