Has the primary driving purpose of all religions throughout the ages been to try to distract followers from the depressing fact that all that awaits us beyond death is complete oblivion?

Answer to Some Dude: My question wasn't intended to be an attack on religion at all. I have, however, noted whenever you ask a question about religion in this forum you receive abusive responses - usually from "Christians".

I think there is a portion of our brain that was genetically engineered by aliens to feed on religious beliefs. I also believe when we evolve enough to override this programming, they will make themselves known to us.

No. Many religions don't engage much thought into the after life at all. Judaism included. Judaism proclaims an afterlife, but its not spoken of very much relatively speaking. Toaism is completely focused on this world. There's probably some people in here who could tell you other examples of what they follow.

But I don't think you wanted to ask a question, you just wanted to make an attack on religous people with yuor hostile wording. Personally I'm an outspoken Christian, I get mocked a lot for it. Your inuendo that I am wrong doesn't bother me.

The truth is satanism is the way forward. Just read any of you're so called ancient texts. The only constant is Satan ( IN ONE FORM OR ANOTHER ). Five hundred years ago the Christians were doing the dirty work for the chosen one, now we have the gullable male Muslim youth, next we will pick on the Jews.Carry on the good work simpletons

Most people can't deal with the notion of the possibility oblivion so they use "fantasy" to help them cope.

If we could really comprehend the incomprehensible size of the Universe we just might be able to comprehend how incredible the moment of "now" is and stop wasting time on conjecture and speculation about the future.

NO.most religions purposes have been to prepare people for the life to come after they die. and not just the Christian religion but eeven non Christian religion. The egyptians, the Jews, etc. most of your major religions prepare their followers for an afterlife, whatever that might be for their particular religion. it's this preparation for the afterlife that helps people go through this life without the fear of dying that keeps them going forward with hope.

The first major factor is the belief that the creator of the universe wrote a book. The second is that your life here is really insignificant and that you should live in preparation for death because that is the true beginning of your eternal existence. I just cant buy either one.

It didn't quite start that way but that's its big attraction these days (that plus a super-parent to turn to in times of trouble and providing a sense of belonging). Religion is the triumph of ignorance and superstition over reason and sanity.

If all we had waiting us is oblivion then there wouldn't be any need to tell the good news that God was in Christ reconciling man to himself, pardoning their sin, and giving those who believe in him and receive the son of God, eternal life.
