Our cat had 3 kittens 4 months ago. One recently left to go to his new home and the new owner informed us that he has hookworms. Should we treat mama cat and the other 2 kittens, assuming they have them too? They just came back from their spay/neuter/rabies/distemper appointments and the county shelter didn't say anything about the worms. What product can we use if we need to treat them? We'd like to avoid 3 high vet bills as they seem very healthy.

Yeap, you should treat them all. The truth is that 95% of puppies and kittens are born with hookworms or roundworms, and they are passed to them by their mother. It is best to treat all of your kitties because hookworms and roundworms can be transmitted to humans. It is unlikely to happen, but the possibility is there, so you want to make sure your pets are healthy and worm free.

Pyrantel Pamoate is the medication of choice for hookworms/roundworms. It is over the counter. Your vet can sell it to you or you can buy it in most petstores. Just follow dosage for weight correctly. It can be given to pregnant animals and 2 week old animals, so it's very safe. Repeat dose 2 weeks later.

Absolutely YES---this can be passed from cat-to-cat. PLEASE do NOT even entertain the idea of going the cheap-route by purchasing something over the counter at places like Wal-Mart, etc. Unfortunately, it will cost you a little bit, but DO consult your vet about this. Do NOT use anything that your vet does NOT recommend, you could kill your kitties. Don't take the chance.
