If cavemen had a religion at all it was Animism, God in all things, sky, rocks, trees, bugs, birds, fish, etc.
Was there religion before humans? Nope, religion is a human construct to codify a particular explanation of the world and the universe as well as "God"

You did not define which part of the world your 'cave-people' came from. Neither did you specify the era/period. My great great grandparents lived in a cave-house, whitewashed walls, with a door and windows and tiled floors. They were probably Christian.
People lived in caves in Southern France (16-17,000 years ago) and seemed to be Animists, much like the current 'stone-age' people who live today in the Amazon or New Guinea.
When one lives close to/part of nature, the 'natural' religion seems to be Animism. Native American Indians follow this type of religion also, for thousands of years, until Christianity and other religions came with the invaders and settlers.
So it is likely that 'animism' is a broad answer to your question.
Your other question: Was there religion before humans existed? I believe that question is un-answerable with current knowledge. How would one know if higher mammals or primates for instance had a concept of 'sacred' or 'god'?

Are you basing your question on Creation or Evolution?
It appears that if you are basing this on cave-people, then you are looking on the Evolution side, which means therefore that there was no creator, nor was there any religious practice.
If you are looking at the Creation side of things, there were no cave-people, because man started out as a perfect, reasonable, human race with a very loving creator which gave man a desire to praise his Creator.
On that reason, there was only one belief in the garden of eden. After that messed up, other beliefs came into place.
But at first, the Creator, was obviously, Jehovah (psalm 83:18 Duteronomy chapter 6)

All thinking beings crave companionship and reason. Religion provides that. So as long as thinking has occured, so has religion. The "most correct" classification of cave man religion would be paganism, in my opinion anyways.

They worshiped the religion called "Happiness and harmony" they lived in the caves when the came out they knew about religion, caste, class, race, politics, language, war, destruction and violence, and they forgot about happiness and harmony. The cave man fell into all the catagories and started to fight with every differnces just to feel better than the other.......and we continue to do so, in our homes, in communities and counties.

They probably worshipped the sun. Scientists also think the Neanderthal believed in an afterlife, and I doubt there was any religion before humans existed. Maybe some aliens somewhere had a religion, but no one can really answer that question.

Did people ever actually live in caves? I admit, I don't know how many caves there are in Africa or Iraq, where the earliest human civilizations were, but I don't think those people lived in caves.
Was there religion before humans existed? Well, the angels worship God, so maybe.

i doubt that they had religion in the same sense that we have religion today. probably just about anything they came into vontact with that was new and different they honoured as an idol. i doubt there was religion before humans existed since before that there was no reason for religion. since GOD made humans during the seven days that He made mthe earth and then put adam and eve in the garden of eden so that they might worship HIM.

Religion is an invention of the primitive human mind and an infection of the current human mind.
