Yes. And if it's hard enough to leave a mark on that child's face, whoever is doing the slapping needs to get help. Slapping a child is not an appropriate punishment in our society.

OMG! Yes this Is child abuse! Your mother is crazy O_O My mum has hit me on the bum before, but that was when I was younger, she doesn't do it anymore! Well, its not child abuse if ur mum has got really angry and slapped you or your sister round the face, but she has been leaving marks and she keeps on doing it! What shes doing is child abuse, she might have broken your sister nose! If my mum ever done it, I would walk out the house and live with my nan or something! I wouldn't care if shes my mum she cant do that. I don't think you should actually ever hit a child because your not actually really teaching them anything. but that's my opinion. ANYWAY UR MUM IS ABUSING U SHE SHOULDNT BE DOING THAT! You have to do something ASAP or something WORSE could happen

Of course it is. What a silly question. Consider the daanger of accidentally hitting something like an eye or and ear and causing permanent damage, because they don't hold still while you're swatting away. The jerking could even damage the spinal cord.
The writer for the Beach Boys, Brian Wilson, has permanent damage to his ears because his father used to hit him in the head when he was a kid.

I am not sure if it is technically child abuse....but it is wrong!! It is degrading, humiliating and totally damaging to the self worth of a child. Why would it be ok to slap a child in the face for something like maybe not liking what they are saying.....Would it be ok for a boss to do it to an employee? A lawyer to do it to a witness? Or how about a teacher to her student? Why would it even be remotely ok for us to do something to our children that would not be acceptable for a stranger to do to them who witnessed the same behavior?

Yes it is.
The only slap a child ever receives is at confirmation from a cardinal or bishop, when they take their confirmation name.
And it is a touch, not a slap, although they used to call it a slap.

Yes. There are other, more effective ways, to ways to correct bad behavior. Take away privileges, etc.
Hitting is a knee jerk reaction. It doesn't solve anything.
You have to have a "disipline plan" that does not involve hitting or slapping so you know how to react correctly when the occasion arises.

a pop on the mouth as punishment for back-talking is well deserved. but a slap several times on the face is definetly going overboard... that is considered abuse.
