as a worker it is always nice to have your efforts acknowledged, simply stating that the comment was appreciated and how it made your friend feel is all that is needed (since it was in e-mail form a thank-you e-card would be appropriate). As a person who has had many supervision positions, a quick thank-you or a positive comment is a blessing amongst all the neg issues and stress one has to deal with over the course of a day. quick, simple, and professional (appropriate to the working environment/relationship your friend is in) the sooner the reply the better, don't over think it - basic human kindness and respect transcends professional boundaries, hope it helps!

For one thing, the friend should print that letter out and put it with her resume. That is a nice feather in her cap!
I agree with another respondent: "Thank you so much for your kind words of encouragement. I am so very grateful that my efforts are appreciated and acknowledged. It makes me desire to do more and more to help my company."
