This can happen when your body misinterprets the sleep paralysis you get while asleep as asphyxiation. One of the reasons why dreams reoccur is that they're is a similar trigger happening during the day that causes the nightmare. The right hemisphere of your brain uses the same metaphors to interpret the similar event.

Dreams tends to reflect things that are happening in your real life that you are having issues with. If you can look at parts in your life that you feel are bothering you. What do you feel about your current life situation that is practically choking you?
If you fix this situation, chances are the re-occurring nightmares will stop.

Seek spirtitual guidance. Terms like sleep paralysis ect. are misleading scientific terms. I was having a bad dream about a year ago. I was 34. I woke up scared to death like how i felt from a bad dream when i was a child. Never had that feeling in my adult life. When i woke up i couldn't move. Was on my stomach and literally couldn't move. Felt like some force was holding me down. I was able to say either outloud or in my mind "Jesus, help me" And then i was able to move. Some smart person told me this was sleep paralysis. I don't buy it. Then again you could have some type of breathing problem while you were sleeping. Either way. Doctor or spiritual guidance should help.

To dream that you are choking on an object, suggests that you may find some advice/remarks/situation hard to swallow or difficult to accept. Alternatively, you may feel that you are unable to completely express yourself in a situation. In particular, if you are choking on food, then it may be an expression of self-guilt and unnurtured feelings.
Most dreams contain messages that serve to teach us something about ourselves. Unfortunately many a times we forget what we dream about as we go about our daily routine. With recurring dreams, the message may be so important and/or powerful that it just will not go away. The frequent repetition of such dreams forces you to pay attention and confront the dream. The dream is trying desperately to tell you something. Such dreams are often nightmarish or frightening in their content, which also helps you to take notice and pay attention to them.
Recurring dreams are quite common and are often triggered by a certain life situation or a problem that keeps coming back again and again. These dreams may recur daily, once a week, or once a month, but whatever the frequency, there is little variation in the dream content itself. It usually points to a personal weakness, fear, or your inability to cope with something in your life - past or present.
The repetitive patterns in your dream can reveal some of the most valuable information on yourself. It may point to a conflict, situation or matter in your waking life that remains unresolved or unsettled. Or some urgent underlying message in your unconscious is demanding to be understood.
Following are some tips in overcoming your recurring dreams.
1. In understanding your recurring dream, you must be willing to accept some sort of change or undergo a transformation.
2. You must be willing to look within yourself and confront whatever you may find no matter how difficult it my be.
3. You must be able to look at the dream from an objective point of view. Try to get pass the emotional and reactive elements of the dream and get down to the symbolic images. Many times dreams are masked by elements that are disturbing preventing you to delve any deeper. This is a defense mechanism that your unconscious may be putting up.
4. Be patient. Do not get discourage if these dreams still recur even after you thought you have come to understand them.
5. Learn to accept yourself truly and fully.
Often times, once you discover what your recurring dream is trying to tell you, these dreams will change or altogether disappear.

dreams are just symbols that allow you to deal with things going on in your awake life. so ,my question to you is... is there something in your life that you want to say to somebody but are afraid to so you feel like you are choking to keep from saying it to them. if so you need to give yourself permission to say it to them. do it in an adult ,straight forward manner. but fordt you need to relax. keep your shoulders down. breath in slowly through your nose to a count of 8 hold for a count of 4 then slowly release through your mouth to a count of 8. you may need to do this a few times but it does help. good luck.
