Go to your local and surrounding areas Animal Control or Pounds or their websites. Adopting from them will save the life of an animal. Then if you are not happy with the choices go to www.petfinder.com. You can search shelters on there as well. They also have an area of classified ads of animals up for adoption from their owners. If you have a certain type in mind there are numerous rescue for breeds. I work with Siamese Rescue and they have numerous Siamese mixes and Snowshoe cats and kittens. They also have pure breeds that have been found or people had to give up. You can find the closest headquarters in your area by going to siameserescue.org.

Many local shelters put up pictures of their adoptable animals, check to see if your local shelter has a web site (you can call and ask).
There's also Petfinder, which has it broken down by states and different areas in your state.
