In this case, 'thick' means stupid or slow witted, which I sometimes am.

Trying hard is okay...trying smart is better which you can do. Being thick which I interpret to mean "stubborn" does not mean you do not posses your wits about you, after all you recognize your short comings

Thick headed can also be interpreted as stubborn in my native tongue and in colloquial English...although you are right, in this context it probably means dumb...where is your answer..

Nothing wrong in being thick. it's not trying to improve that is the problem. keep at it some of it will stick and become wisdom

I wish i was as 'thick' as you. (Though i do look at the stars & do sudoku, but i wouldn't do a job that mainly involves getting shouted at! lol)
You have a wife too, i bet she doesn't think you're thick, usless maybe, but not thick. lol ;-)

as long as you do right by others in life.. that is a good thing..
look at it this way some of the brainest of people lack common sense. for a start
