Units run from as low as $ 60-80.00 up to several $ Thousand. It depends on what your wanting to accomplish. for most people they choose from Magellen, Garmin or Lowerence. If your looking for one for driving on the hwy you'll need to find one for that or for hunting - outdoor hiking and such you'll need to look for that and add such features as Topo or Marine mapping. Usually for something that works reasonably well you will probably spend in the neighborhood of $ 300-500 I'd say.

Consider how many locations you want to store. They vary on that, as well as "waypoints" from A to B.

Can it direct you to the nearest gas station, rest stop, police department, hospital, restaurants, other features?

Consider whether it is a simple system that merely plots your location on an on-board map, or if the map dynamically updates as you travel. The latter type will steer you around traffic, construction, or other mobile problems.

Size of the screen may be important, along with resolution.

It should "talk", too. You don't want to be looking at the map while driving to figure out what comes next, it needs to tell you as you go.

Battery life is a "maybe". None last very long without a charge, so you're pretty much tied to a car's accessory slot anyway.

I've only used the Garmin in a rental car, one time, but that one was user friendly and did all that was necessary.
