As it says really I'm hoping to visit LA next year staying a week somewhere central and then a week by the coast or near Disney - its going cost about 4k for the hotels/flights - is it worth it, is this a place for children or more adults?

There is something for everyone in Southern Cal. Plenty of theme parks, zoos and beaches for the kids and Museums, concerts and clubs for the adults. Not to mention great food just about everywhere. Both the kids and you will have a ball. If you need more suggestions for places to visit or tips on safety just let me know. Have fun.

You can have fun here with kids if you plan well, but I don't know about 2 weeks. I have two toddlers - ages 2 and 3 and we live near LA and visit fairly often. Your poblem is more the age difference in your kids, what would be fun for a 3 year old might not be so fun for an 11 year old and vice versa - but you would have that problem anywhere you go.

LA does have a lot of museums and places like the La Brea Tar Pits, Ripley's Believe it or Not, the Museum of Tollerance, the Griffith Observatory and the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Those places might be fun for your 11 year old but your 3 year old will probably get bored.

One thing to do in LA is the California Science Center, which is free and has hands on exhibits for all ages. Its a lot of fun and highly recommended. Go on a weekday morning when its less crowded.

What I would actually reccomend, if you have 2 weeks for vacation, is to spend a week in LA and a week in San Diego (its only a couple hours from Disneyland). San Diego has Sea World, the SD Zoo (MUCH better than the LA Zoo), the Wild Animal Park and Balboa Park. Balboa Park is a large public park full of museums, including ones that appeal to kids (think airplanes and cars) and it has a free arboratum, playgrounds and a large fountain. San Diego also has the Scripps Aquarium, which is really nice. The beaches there are nice, too. San Diego is a very family friendly city and might be better for a 3 year old.

L.A can be a lot of funs with the kids.. It depends where you go, I mean.. there are places for adults where kids won't like it, and there are also places where kids can go to or a place where the whole family can enjoy together..

Well, here are some ideas... If you'll be right around the L.A Area then.....

Hollywood - go see the Star Walk of Fame along Hollywood Blvd, and the famous Mann Chinese Theather is also there. You can also walk aroun Hollywood & Highland, where there's shops and foods, plus by starbucks (next to California Pizza Kitchen) you'll be able to see a glance of the "Hollywood" sign! And the Kodak theather (where the academy award is hosted at), is also there.
Cost: FREE.. well.. parking's $2 with validation.

Universal Studio Hollywood - largest entertainment in LA! if you don't have time to go to the themepark (it would need one full day) then just got to the Universal City Walk, it's nice going there at nightime. But if you do go to the theme park, make sure you go on the Studio Tour, that's something you can't miss!

Farmers Market at the Grove in LA - (cross street: fairfax and 3rd) it's also an outdoor shopping center, and at the Farmers Market, you can basically find any kind of food you want. There's japanase, chinese, mexican, french, american, middle-eastern, italian, brazilian, you name it :) Or you can always get out a little bit, there's always the famous Pink's Hotdog. (cross street: La Brea and Melrose), the line might be really long, but it's worth the wait :)

Getty Museum - the museum collects and exhibits classical sculpture and art, European paintings, drawings, manuscripts, sculpture, decorative arts, and photographs. but it's really nice, and there's also a nice garden where you can relax with a beautiful setting and a nice view of Los Angeles. Trust me, it's more than just a Museum! (I don't like museums, but I like going to the Getty's)
Cost: FREE to get in, just $10 for parking!

Beverly Hills - the famous Rodeo Drive, where you can go shopping, and sight-seeing!

Santa Monica - BEACH and has the Santa Monica Pier, which has Pacific Park where there are some carnival rides, and a very nice high-ferris-wheel, where you can see the view of the ocean, and the cities from up top, there's also a small arcade. Along the pier, there are some local entertainments and a direct access to the beach. There's also the Santa Monica 3rd St Promenade, and that is an outdoor shopping center, with nice entertainments on the sides.

A little bit outside the L.A area, there's always..
Anaheim - Disneyland and Disney's California Adventure! They also have Downtown Disney, a place right next to the theme parks where you can walk-around and relax while enjoying the entertainments they have on the side or even go shopping around! Oh and Crystal Cathedral is also in Anaheim, it's a church but a very beautiful church where the building is made with nothing else but glass. You should check it out just too see how wonderful it is.

Buena Park - Knott's Berry Farm, western style theme park with pretty good roller coaster rides.

Long Beach - Aquarium of the Pacific, it's pretty nice and neat, there's also The Queen Mary, and go a little bit to the other side of Long Beach, there will be Naples Island, it's like a little version of Italy, you can ride a Gondola there, which can be pretty romantic.

San Marino - visit the Huntington Library Park. It's a really really nice botanical garden, there's also art collections there. But the garden is nice, I love it there. And they have a very big and nice Japanese garden. It can be very romantic there too. Keep in mind that they close at 4:30.

Well, here are just SOME things that I can think of at the moment! Hope you'll be going to LA and enjoy your visit there!!

This is a good question I live in Simi Valley and I`m 13 and I`ve been to Disney land ever since I was six and I`m still in love with it. Disneyland is for children and teenagers.
They have rides for all ages. The kid rides are family friendly and they have rides for teenagers and adults to enjoy. I think your 11 yr old will enjoy it and you will to, its not just for kids.
You and your 11 yr old could enjoy space mountain and Indianna Jones. Disney isn`t the only place you could go to the L.A Zoo which is also family friendly. And you could go to Malibu and go to the pier and go on some rides and play on the beach. And if you want you could Hire a car out and go to San Diego an hours drive, You could go to the San Diego Zoo which is also great and Lego land for your kids and the best place to go besides Disney is Sea World. Sea World has shows and sea mammals you could pet the dolphins watch the Killer whale show, and much much more. You could go down into hollywood and go to Universal studios which is known to be the entertainment capital of the world.
I would go to LA for vacation its great fun for all ages.

What Brandy C said - the age difference is what may hold you up, but all in all, it's a lot of fun. I don't know if anyone else mentioned it, but the Griffith Obeservatory is open again and it's great. But do the usual: Universal Studios/CityWalk, Farmer Market on 3rd Street, Disney, Knotts, the beach, Graumans Chinese Theater.

This place, if you are talking Los Angeles then it is very much an adult place to visit. A holiday to Universal Studios, Disney Land and Long Beach (for the Queen Mary, the cars and the huge flying boat) then children can go but you have to be creative to keep them occupied.

Yes agreed...not really a family place to visit, or not at least until they are 21. Disney World is always a popular place for them.

I don't really like LA but I think everyone should experience the horror of it just once. I prefer Florida for sun and fun - in 2 weeks, you can do Orlando, Miami, the Keys, etc.
