Not getting it yet, but it's good to do research now for when I get one in a few years or so.

* Size doesn't matter.
* Obviously it will need some sort of grooming, but I don't want something that needs to be brushed twice a day (1-2 days a week is much better).
* Not a dog that has a really high exercise need.
* Not a species prone to excessive barking.
* Good with small children.

I've had experience with owning a Beagle and a German Shepherd X Border Collie as family pets.

Oh a pomeranian only needs brushed once a week. And they are good with small children. They dont need to go on a lot of walks. And they dont bark as much as people think. If you dont know what kind of dog i am talking about here is a video of my pomeranian. She is wonderful:

No matter what breed you get, all dogs need excercise. This would be ideal for you if you had a fenced in yard that the dog can run around in.

Beagles, terriers, retrievers are best with kids - especially the retrievers. But - you can talk to the people at the Humane Society shelters - they would have a better idea of which breed would fit you and your family....then you can adopt one from the shelter.

Obviously, you wouldn't want to get a rottweiller or a pitt bull.

Good luck.

I would steer clear of adopting an older dog unless you know it's history. We adopted one that had been allowed to run loose, and it would get out of the house and yard every chance it got, and absolutely would not come back when called. He was a cockapoo, and did not shed at all, and was good with the family,

Our 11 year old black lab chow mix that we got as a puppy, is the best we've ever had, but we did spend a bit of time training her .Everyone in the family must be consistent with the training so that the dog will understand what is and is not acceptable behavior.

I'd suggest a lab or Golden retriever, but not as puppies! As puppies they are high energy and crazy. But after 2-3 years they settle down and become the best dogs ever. The lab wouldn't need a lot of grooming, but a Golden would have to be brushed.

You can find tons of dogs like this on petfinder.com, both mixes and purebreds. They are all rescued from being put down. Have a look and see if you find a dog for you.

Shih-tzus fulfill all the requirements except the grooming. You can keep your dog clipped in a "puppy cut" that will elimanate the need for daily brushing of long fur.

Shih-tzus are companion pets, don't bark, like gentle children, and love to snooze in your lap. Very happy and goofy breed--they are very "clown-like."

I think Catherine A had a good suggestion with the Boxer. They are clowns at heart, but look dignified. There are few breeds who are better with kids.

Beagles are great family pets and Labrador Retrievers are,too.Beagles tend to roam because of their nature.If you are to get another Beagle it is best to have a fenced in place to where he cant get out on the road and get hit.Labrador Retrievers are gentle and loyal.They are great with kids and love to be rubbed.It is your decision and I hope my advice helps youchoose the perfect breed!

I suggest a Boxer.

Low grooming needs, loves to play, but doesn't need to run or go on miles-long walks.

They do not bark excessively, and they are fabulous with kids.

Downside: they drool. A lot.

A Mutt would be your best option. BUt also they have now labadoodled and golddoodles, which are labs and golden ret. mixed with a poodle so there is little no shedding which is great. Also they are big and cuddly and very playful. Good LUck

You should visit your local shelter. There are many great dogs there! I've adopted my dog from there, she's wonderful! A lot of innocent and helpless dogs are getting put to sleep because they're in shelters. You'll be saving a life.
