If she were a deaf mute then she wouldn't be able to scream. More likely she is deaf and doesn't know how to talk. Your friend should learn sign language and teach it to her daughter. They can go to classes together, or if that is too difficult, learn from a book.

As to the other thing... many children are plagued with night terrors, which involve terrifying shrieks and thrashing about. The child is difficult to wake up (in fact, one shouldn't wake a child during a night terror) and remembers nothing upon waking. Night terrors usually begin around age two and happen more often after a stressful day. She should outgrow them by the time she is six.

I can imagine that many days are stressful to a deaf child who is unable to communicate. One way to relieve some of her stress (other than sign language) is to let her have a good nap every day and adequate sleep at night.

An obvious place to start would be a pediatrician. He or she might recommend a sleep study where child will sleep in a controlled clinical environment with sensors attached. She might have a medical condition that prevents her from sleeping all the way through.

As to being deaf and screaming, "screaming" is not a verbal skill - it has nothing to do with a child being deaf/mute. Any child would do this when scared and have no words to describe it.

Another possibility is a recurring nightmare. It should show up in sleep study as an increased activity in brain when there shouldn't be much.

If the child is Deaf Mute she would not be "screaming " STOP. The child would have no verbal skills. As for the mother thinking that a "demons" is bothering the child. Tell the mother to call a priest to come and bless the house. Or she can burn sage to get rid to f the spirits!

Deaf-mute was a term historically used by hearing people to identify a person who was deaf and could not speak. In the past "deaf-mute" was socially acceptable, usually to describe deaf people who use a signed language, but is now considered offensive (similar to the way that "colored" was once used to describe African Americans but is now looked upon as derogatory). The preferred term today is simply "deaf". The term "deaf-mute" first appears in the Code of Hammurabi, an ancient set of laws from the near east, in 1700 BC. [1] It is also referenced in ancient Greek writing of the 7th century BC. It continues to be used to refer to deaf people, mainly within a historical context, to indicate deaf people who cannot speak, or have some degree of speaking ability, but choose not to speak because of the negative or unwanted attention atypical voices sometimes attract.
