i asked this on the knot about asking my guy to marry him and that i want to use my mothers engagement ring. everyone was mean to me when they answered! saying that being engaged was just a status, having my mothers ring was just to show to the rest of the world i was engaged, that i must be immature because i wanted to ask him(i am 35 and he is 34), and that we need to learn how to communicate. well to let you guys know, we have talked about getting married and the only reason he is waiting is to be able to afford a ring. so what i did end up doing is telling him about my moms and he is going to use it to propose to me..when, i have no clue, but at least that is all settled! but can you believe how mean those women were?

Alas, communication online is brimful of openings for misinterpretation. It's very easy to grab ahold of the wrong end of the stick.

I posted for a while on a bridal board (not the knot, but I don't choose to identify which one it was). One day a woman posted a long question about how to get random strangers and corporations to finance her wedding because she couldn't afford to get married without it. I promptly noted that anyone can afford to get married. I said some friends of mine had recently gone to Vegas and spent less than $100 on getting married. I then said that if the plans she had cost more than she could afford, perhaps it was time to look into either scaling back the plans a bit or else taking more time to earn the money to pay for it.

The next thing I knew, I'd been kicked off the board for daring to tell someone to elope! I didn't tell her to elope. I said it's possible to afford to get married without corporate sponsorship or greedy attempts to part total strangers from their money.

Don't worry about what they said. As long as you and your guy are on the same page, it doesn't matter what they think.

If your guy really wants to marry you and he is not using the ring as a excuse not to, who cares where the ring came from.

My only concern is that if he can't afford to save for a ring, can he afford to be married. Financial trouble is one on the top things that make for an unhappy marriage. But, I do understand that engagement rings can be very expensive. Good luck for your future.

Sound like you need new Friends. Women can be very much into appearances and pecking order. the bad ones that is. so if What your saying is that this woman be little your attempt at happiness, I would think that is was because they were unhappy themselves.

Who really cares what those hags think. Just because they can't get a man is no reason for you to feel down.
Get new friends. Ones that will be happy for you.
