The highest selling paper is the Herald Sun. It is a daily paper that is based in Victoria where the majority of their readers are from. There is a New South Wales version of this paper called The Daily Telegraph, however its readership is not as high. The only national general paper is The Australian but despite being national, it has not been able to sell as many as the Herald Sun.

The Australian is a national newspaper but, like many Australian newspapers, it is owned by Rupert Murdoch so it has his pro-Howard bias on it. The best papers in the country are the Sydney Morning Herald, The Age in Melbourne and the Canberra Times. The Australian has the best crossword puzzle. The other State newspapers are the Courier Mail in Brisbane, The Mercury in Hobart, the Advertiser in Adelaide and the West Australian in Perth. Most of these are Murdoch papers.

Really it depends on what you mean by number 1. Are you refering to readership? Circulation? Geographic reach??
There are only two national newspapers in Australian, being:
- The Australian - general news newspaper
- The Australian Financial Review - general news and business focus
However none of these newspapers outsell their metropolitan conterparts. Most cities and towns in Australia only have one daily paper, with the exception of Sydney and Melbourne who have two.

Depends where in Australia you are, each state is different. In Brisbane Queensland it's probably the Courier Mail. Not sure if other states have a paper of the same name or not...but yeah.
