it really depends on the maturity level... i was 10 when we lived in barrie and my mom and dad left me at home alone, but then again i was very mature since i had to help out when my mom had cancer and couldnt do things so really if u trust ur child and they know what and who to call f there is a problem u should be ok!

It's my understanding that there is no law regarding this issue, but they consider several factors when judging a child's ability to stay home alone: maturity, length of time alone, how well you know your neighbours, availability of someone to come quickly when child is distressed.
My 10-yr old nephew is very capable of coming home from school and staying by himself for two hours until my sister gets home from work (summer vacation - NO WAY, he's with his grandmother all day). My twins are 9, both boys, and at this moment, I can't see them capable of staying at home alone in less than a year. Maybe not even two.

I do not know about Canada, here in IL. it's 1/2 hour at the age of 14

it depends on the child, some kids are fine at 7 or 8 as long as you lay down the ground rules, safety concerns etc Some kids are so misbehaving that they need constant supervision when they are 14 and 15 still.
