I will be taking the train into Grand Central. From there, I need to get to Penn Plaza. Is there a subway that rubs from Grand Central right to Penn Station? Or am I better off just taking a cab? Also, I noticed that the subway systems have numbers, like 4 5 6 Does that mean that you need to take a 4, then a 5 than a 6? How does that work? I'm used to Boston's subway system. Much Easier...Red, Yellow, Blue.

There's not one subway that goes directly from Grand Central to Penn Station. If you want to use the subway, you'll need to make a transfer. You'd be best off taking the S towards Times Square from Grand Central. Exit the S at Times Sqaure. You would then need to transfer to a 1,2,3 line downtown to Penn.

The groups of subway lines (like trains 4,5, and 6) are different trains that run on the same tracks in Manhattan, 4 and 5 are express trains that make only certain stops, while 6 is the local train that makes all stops. Most of the subway "groupings" consist of a local and express line. The lines do eventually split, but in Queens, the Bronx, and Brooklyn. If you plan to use the subway, Get a map, to check if the train you are using stops at the station you want.

You can also use www.hopstop.com for subway directions. I find it quite useful.

You could actually walk it (its about a mile or so). I do it all the time, but from Penn to Grand Central. What I usually do (if its raining or I get lazy) is take either the 1,2, or 3 trains up one stop to the Port Authority Station. From there I either take the 7 or the Cross town S to Grand Central. Just reverse it to get from Grand Central to Penn. Take either the 7 or the S to the Port Authority, and take the 1,2, or 3 down a stop.

The S and the 7 actually do drop you off at the Times Square Station, but that one and the Port Authority Station are connected, creating one really huge subway station underground.



Basically groups of subway lines (1,2,3; 4,5,6; A,B,C, J,M,Z) mean that they run on the same stops (this the the best way I can explain it). They are all separate lines, but they parallel each other, and stop at the same stop, although not necessarily on the same platform (one may be down a level from the other two).

There isn't one subway line that takes you directly from Grand Central to Penn Station. The best way to go would be to take the shuttle to Times Square and take a downtown 1 train. Penn Station will be the next stop on the 1 train from Times Square.

Those are just train lines. Theres the 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,A,B,C,D,E,F,G,J,L,M,N,Q,R,V,W,Z and three shuttle trains and it's like the lines named after colors in Boston we just call ours by a letter or number.

None go directly from grand central to Penn Station. To get to Penn Station from Grand Central you would have to take the Shuttle (S) to the west side and take either the 1,2,3,A,C, or E trains to Penn Station.

Take the crosstown S shuttle at Grand Central to Times Square, then take the 1,2,3,A,E to Penn Station 34th Street.
