I must say the Beagles are great dogs, but we recently went with the Havanese, small enough for the lap and road trips. Tough and spunky enough to handle two teenage sons of ours. People are drawn to him and want to pet him, he loves the attention. One thing we too wanted, was less shedding, and the Havanese sheds very little. Here is a site that helped us decide on him:

How big a place do you have for a dog. It would almost be cruel to get a big dog if you live in an apartment and he has no place to run and play.
Any dog raised with gentleness with your family will be a good family dog. Goldens have a great reputation and so do labs. Collies are wonderful, but that long hair can cause some problems. St. Bernards are cool except for the drool. (sorry about the rhyme)
I like mutts. Go to the shelter and save one.

maximum dogs will make good family contributors pets with the main suitable training, yet some are greater straightforward than others. Labs and Golden Retrievers make good family contributors dogs, yet regrettably because of the fact they're the main uncomplicated for it, human beings think of they don't ought to socialise and prepare them, so despite dogs you do verify to get, be optimistic to socialise it early! :3 That reported, i'm greater partial to Newfoundlands. they're very huge dogs nevertheless, yet they seem to be most of the main suitable family contributors dogs around with a very candy temperament, and that they might guard the errors and studying of youngsters and are very affected person. So are Saint Bernards. they are going to go everywhere you will, yet they don't want to be warm and swimming is often a plus. =) once you're searching for smaller, a great number of the herding dogs could be good. yet some are actually not. to call a pair that are good: Bearded collies are intense-high quality family contributors dogs, particularly in case you have an lively family contributors. Briards are too, yet they may be fantastically reserved with strangers if not socialized precise. comparable with babies, so it may be carried out early. we've a bearded collie/briard blend, he's the main suitable dogs we've ever had the exhilaration of possessing. he's powerful with all different animals, youngsters, human beings, and doubtless the neatest dogs i've got ever met...yet he isn't huge on fish aquariums for some reason. In my opinion, Goldens are the ultimate family dog. I recommend this breed for many clients who are looking to become a dog owner.
They are very eager to please and are a true family dog. They are happiest when they are with their humans. They are very intelligent and excellent with children. Puppy obedience classes are always recommended for any breed to learn basic training, proper behavior, and to increase socialization. Goldens are quick learners!!! I also feel as though Goldens have a sense of humor :) They are always smiling and it is seldom to see one without its tongue hanging out and the tail going in all directions. They are a wonderful breed! However, they do shed. They usually blow their coats twice a year, but will shed between blows.
Good luck!! Please consider rescuing a Golden out of Golden rescue... there are so many in need of a forever home!! petfinder.com is an excellent site that will connect you with available Goldens in your area.

I have a Boxer. They are considered medium breeds. My female is 9 mths old and weighs about 60 lbs. Boxers are VERY loving, loyal animals. They are also very active, friendly and playful.
If you want a less active, smaller dog maybe a Bull Dog; they are sweet animals, too.
