They don't know the value of pearls and anything they can't eat, they walk over. The phrase is a metaphor, and an apt one.

Sorry but I've always wondered about people that place value in gold, diamonds, pearls and such. Pretty, but not worth fighting about. I don't care how big the diamond is it isn't worth killing over.
