I tend to give mine to a jumble sale.

How about you?

Thank you

Well I try my hardest to look grateful and pleased, particularly if it is from someone very special.
I might keep it for a while to see if I can make use of it or if the gift grows on me. Eventually I might give it away to charity shop or some such thing and maybe pretend, if asked, that it broke.
I always tell myself that it doesn't mean I like the person concerned any less and that is what counts.

If the gift is very personal (like handmade) and wouldn't intrude too much in your life, you should try to keep it as a happy token of your friendship.

If it isn't terribly personal (a book without an inscription, a shirt), you may exchange it if you have a receipt. Or feel free to re-gift it, but be sure to remove any tags or notes and don't give it to someone who would realize it is a re-gift.

Also, you may sell or donate it.

Dispose of it descreetly, or if it's a small decorative object, put it in a box and display it when the giver comes to visit. (Never tell the giver you dislike the gift, especially if you're close. Asking for a receipt is acceptable only if you want a different size.)

If it is from someone you feel you can be honest with, you could always ask if they still have the receipt and swap it for something you do like. If it is from someone not that close, just pretend you like it and give it away.

Give it to someone who would appreciate it.
Or make a pig in the poke concealed parcel for a groups raffle prize.

Store it in the basement.

One day, I'm going to put it all on ebay, starting bid, one cent.
