It's a parable. You throw out seeds some fall on rocky soil and start growing fast but give out quickly because there is no foundation. As in people who believe and forget soon after.
Some fall on thorny ground That shoots up but gets strangled out by the weeds. As in young Christians that are born of good heart but then are driven under by the sinful nature of the people around them.
Some fall on good ground and grow to give off fruit. As in the Christian that is based on the word and has a good knowledge of God's will for them.
We will be known by our fruit.
God Bless!

It isn't necessary to know where the story is written in the Bible, what is important is the lesson. It speaks about sowing seeds and where some seeds fell, which grew and which did not. It's about wasting your testimony on people who are unable to recieve it. If you want to reach someone, go to the children and tell them the stories of love and forgiveness NOT horrors of damnation and Hell as churches do. Children are innocent. They need as much as we can share with them to survive this nasty, mess that mankind has created for them to be born into.

As one of the previous answerer stated, this Jesus explained. Since nobody included it, here it is. Just read the rest in your own Bible.
Mark 4:2-9 2And he taught them many things in parables, and said unto them in his doctrine: 3Hear ye: Behold, the sower went out to sow. 4And whilst he sowed, some fell by the way side, and the birds of the air came and ate it up. 5And other some fell upon stony ground, where it had not much earth; and it shot up immediately, because it had no depth of earth. 6And when the sun was risen, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away. 7And some fell among thorns; and the thorns grew up, and choked it, and it yielded no fruit. 8And some fell upon good ground; and brought forth fruit that grew up, and increased and yielded, one thirty, another sixty, and another a hundred. 9And he said: He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. The parable of the sowing seeds is simply to warn you about the cares of this world and their ability to remove the word of God from your heart if you are not cautious.

four grounds?
Rocky like a closed heart, where no seed grows.
Out in the open, for the birds to come take - think, the deceiver whispering to the concious "oh..this is bunk," or "well, that's his interpretation", etc
Thickets ...it tries to grow, but is overshadowed by the thorn bush.... that's hearing the message, believing it, but then letting the "wisdom of the world" get in the way...like..well, if you start believing, it means you can't have sex outside marriage, and then telling self, what a bummer because self doesn't want to give up what the Spirit is teaching to give up.
Fertile ground....the good heart...the one the seed will grow in..and then be able to produce fruit.

The parable of the soils- the soils are the conditions of the human heart when the Word of God is received. Only one soil produces fruit. That soil is the heart of a true Christian. The fruit is spiritual- love, joy, peace, patience- NOT converts!

the parable of the sowing of the seeds will always be significant to any situation we are in. to put it into lamens terms: if you do not have the proper conditions for growth it will not happen. jesus was telling the disciples that anyone that does not base his faith on god will not produce what is necessary to spend eternity with him. it all comes down to the fact that christians that do not follow the word of god and do not believe in christ will not last as christians. we all know people that are this way and we all have to be careful not be one of those people. is your christianity planted in the word of god? that is the question that he is asking. are your actions planted in the word of god? is the example you are living planted in the word of god? is your testimony planted in the word of god? if not, don't blame him if it doesn't bear fruit. we are responsible for our faith and the nourishing of it. anything else will be fodder for the scavengers or weeds. in other words; the world of man. we see this everyday. man takes god's word and uses it for the material things of the world and not for god's glory.

Luke, Chapter 8, verses 4-15
by the road, it gets trampled, and birds eat it
rocky soil, it withers because of no moisture
fell among thorns, which choked seeds out
good ground, it grew
The seed is the word of God.
by the road = people hear, but Satan comes and takes it away
rocky soil = people who hear the Word, but it doesn't take root in their hearts
thorns = people hear, but distractions of life, worries, concern with riches, chokes it out
good ground = people who hear the word and hold it in their hearts, learn from it, live it

The meaning has a few levels, firstly you can see it as a literal reference to a mans seed, a man can spill his seed anywhere he wants, but he will only father a child if he puts his seed where it was meant to go. If he fathers a child he gets to send a part of himself forward to the next generation and so on....in other words immortality? another meaning is that humans are influenced by their thoughts. If you let weedy thoughts take hold in your mind, youll get weedy results in your life. Put violent thoughts in, violence comes out of you. Put positive thoughts in and youll get positive results. Put negative thoughts in, youll get negative out....its all very simple. The seeds are literal as well as metaphorical.
