Forgiveness

This parable has great irony in it. When you read the story you will find that it was the unconditional love of the father that was the prodigal element in the story and the selfish and wasted life of the son was less awesome when compared with the great love that the father had for his lost - now returned son. The other interesting thing is that at first sight the two brothers would be seen as a good (older boy) and a bad (younger) brother. However, on reflection it will be noticed that at least the younger brother came to appreciate the goodness of his father where as the older brother never acknowledged the ongoing goodness and richness of his father that he enjoyed everyday without question. The whole story talks about God's unconditional love for all of us. Like the father in the story he does not get outraged about our misbehaviour; but is always waiting to forgive and to welcome us back -even to gently plead with us to convince us; like he does with the older son. The two brothers represent us - we think somewhat differently from the way our heavenly Father thinks and acts towards us. In God's eyes we always have some thing to gain; he is the giver and he is rich in everything - and especially generous in love. From the way we see things we always seem to think that we are missing out on something; little realising how gifted we already are.

Peace

Wendy as the once "Prodigal daughter" I can tell you that parable means more to me than anyone can ever imagine. It is as some of your other answerer's have said an illustration of the love of God for his children. Because of Christs once and final sacrifice for our sins no matter what we have done if we turn back to our God in true repentance he will welcome us back into his family and all of heaven will rejoice at our return.

The Father loved his son, and would have taken his son back even had he been worse.
It was told as a lesson to illustrate in human terms how god will take us back no matter what.

Because the father had a forgiving heart toward his son; more than God who would rather see sinners suffer in hell for eternity.

The father loved him as much as God loves us.

It was a parable for us...no matter how bad we are, if we return to our father, he will celebrate and welcome us home.
