It was simply God's way to bring Jonah to his knees in order that he would listen to God. Jonah finally was broken and humbled and he finally listened to God to go and preach repentance to the Assyrian Ninevehits. The Jews hated Nineveh for taking Israel into captivity.

Why not read the Bible, that is better than asking other people what it means to them, it means different things to different people.
