Primitive people thought that all good things came from the gods. All bad things showed that the gods were angry.
Therefore, the people thought they should sacrifice part of their crops or flock to their gods in order to keep them in favor.
The same goes for children. A healthy male child needed a blood sacrifice. So they circumcised him. Female children were seen as the end of a bloodline, so there was no sacrifice, and the mother was shunned for 2-3 months afterwards.

Because without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins. The animal sacrifices in the Old Testament foretold the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross as the Lamb of God for the forgiveness of sins forever for all mankind.

That is how they were forgiven by God. There were a whole bunch of rules, etc. accoirding to whatever sin you committed. The animal had to be perfect.
God got tired of it all and sent His Son, Jesus, to be the ultimate perfect sacrifice for us all so that we would no longer be under the laws of that sacrifice.

I personally think it was started as a training piece by God because he designed man to be a meat eater. By desensitizing man to slaughtering animals he made it possible.
If EACH OF US had to hunt, kill and carve up our own meat, I wonder how many of us would end up being vegitarians!

Some Gods were offered virgins thrown into a volcano to appease them--the Jewish deity demanded innocent blood be spilled.

Because blood had to be shed for the forgiveness of sins. That's why when Jesus Christ was crucified, being the son of God and perfect, the sins of the world were forgiven. Peace.

Because at that time, "God" was still known as "Yaweh", and was a tribal god the same as Molech, etc. were for other tribes. Like many tribal gods, he was sacrificed to. They didn't have to do it, nor did it do any good.
Their concept of God changed over time until the modern version of "God".
