Yes, after a year it expires. If you open it and drink it, then you must finish it within 2 days because the plastic becomes evil and attacks--uh I mean reacts with the water.

If water is exposed to air it can get impurities in it just like anything else. If it is in an airtight container you usually are safe as far as the water is concerned but you have to take into consideration the container you are keeping it in. The type of plastic that is used for drinking water bottles can break down in it's components very quickly. The bottled water we get on the market, is a # 1 bottle (look at the bottom to see what number is on yours.) They are made for the purpose of using once and tossing them in the trash or recycling bin. If you continue to fill and reuse a # 1 bottle, the plastic will break down and seep into your drinking water and effect your body in a bad way since you are now drinking the plastic chemical as well. Higher numbers on the bottles means the bottles are safer for longer use periods of time. Any other container you have your water in can also effect your water depending on the type of container and the breakdown of the chemical that is used to make that container. Health food stores now carry a container that is made of a different type of plastic that doesn't break down, for people that love to carry their water with them. It comes in two sizes, about a 1 liter size and a 2 quart size. It comes with a drink spout that has an opening in it with a flip up cap or you can purchase a snap up cap too that you that is usually carried right there by the bottles. Since those bottles are not air tight, you should refreshen your water daily in those unless you keep it in the refridgerator in between drinking it.

Also for the record, any plastic will form slime on it when water comes in contact with it. Washing it daily with soap and water will prevent that. Runnning water is not exception, it will still slime down. That is one reason they use chlorine in pools. It kills slime. If you keep your water in a Brita system or similar system in the refridgerator, they are also sliming down even with the fliter so I suggest you empty and wash them weekly. If you are a pet owner and use plastic dished for your pets, they will develope a mouth disease from drinking from slimy plastic dishes. Please give them clean washed dishes daily. The running pet fountains are no different, even with the filters in them. They are just as bad as the Brita or other brand name water containers we use. I wash my pet fountain twice a week. When they had just water bowls, they were changed daily but I also used porcelean bowl then.
