1. We're becoming one global village now. By being multi-lingual, you're making yourself more marketable in terms of the job market. It shows that you have the determination & time to master a language and the open-mindedness to go beyond your comfort zone. You'll also be able to get more international work assignments if you know more languages.
2. Learning another language helps open up your intellectual horizons. You'll have more words about certain concepts.
3. By learning another language, you learn about the culture and you'd be more able to appreciate and understand cultural differences.
About the choices of the language, consider this:
1. English - widely used in the business world
2. French - used in diplomatic circles (one of the official languages of the UN is French)
3. Mandarin - China is becoming an economic powerhouse now.
4. Japan - already an Asian economic power
It's up to you which you want to learn. It would be better if you start off with something that is quite similar to your native language. Or the grammatical structure is similar to your language. For instance, if you're a native English speaker, it's good to start with French since there are a lot of English words which originated from French.

There are many benefits including higher pay in your life, opportunties that will open up for you like wild fire.
Queen Elizabeth was well known for knowing 5 languages which is why her reign was known as the Golden Reign. She never had to have anyone interrupt for her thus screwing things up or changing it a little to imply a different meaning.
You can never be over educated.
Learn English, Mandarin, Japanese, French isn't a bad language if you want to travel Europe but really first what do you want to do and where do you want to go? Spanish is alwasy good due to North and South America but learn the old Spanish not the this mexican garbage.

So if you ever travel to countries that speak these languages, you can speak to them and you can understand what they're saying. Also because you'll be accepted for better jobs. Maybe the most important languages are Japanese English and French. Not sure. Go and check with several companies and ask them what languages you need to know. They will let you know. Good-Luck!
Hope I helped!

There are a list of reasons. One is because of communication. If you happen to run into a person that is not from here , maybe on vacation, then it would be easier for him/her to understand and talk to you.Another reason is for comfort. For example lets say that you have to nake a trip to another country quickly. Then you will be comfortable to know that you acually know the language and dialect when you get there. Also job reasons because it is reaserched that those who biligual or multi-lingual then you will acually be payed from $1000 to $3000 more(depending on the need for that language. If you are still in school that is a wonderful credit to have when in college.Which would lead to a better job.The better the job is the better they will pay you for the language you learned or know.

About the importance of those languages you mention, the Steinke Institute created an index: http://www.phrasebase.com/blog/chinese-soon-to-be-second-most-important-language-for-business.html
If you want to read about this index, go here: http://www.steinke-institut.de/sprachenundwirtschaft.htm
Do you know German? If you don't, you can't read the last one. That's the benefit of knowing it.
