I follow the view of Ahlu-Sunna regarding Ali (R). Prophet (PBUH) said: "My companions are like stars, whoever of them you follow, you will be rightly guided". But some stars shines over the other. Some are more brighter but many are even invisible to naked eyes. But stars are stars. Sun is one amoungst them.
Ali(R) was one of the shining stars amoung the companions and the fourth Caliph of Islam.

"My eyes are sore are my legs are thin, but I'll stand by you, O Messenger of Allah!" Thus said a young man of ten, when the Holy Prophet put his message before his own relatives. The boy was Ali, the cousin of the Holy Prophet. He was the first boy to embress Islam. The Holy Prophet once said of him, "I am the city of knowledge and Ali is its gate." Ali was one of the ten men who got from the Prophet the good news of Paradise.

The three Caliphs before Ali depended much on Ali's advice. Omar used to say, "Ali is the best judge among us." More than once, when Omar had to leave Medina, he left Ali in the capital as his deputy. In fact Omar considered Ali the fittest peson to carry on his work. If he did not nominate him successor, it was because he felt sure of his election by the people. Ali was the hero of many a battle fought in the lifetime of the Prophet. When the exception of Tabuk, he joined all battles and expeditions. In the battle of Badr, Ali's sword did real wonders. According to Arab practice, three of the bravest warriors of the Quraish came out for single combat. Ali killed two of them. This struck terror in the heart of the enemy. After becoming Caliph, Ali gave his first address. It was eloquent and forceful. In it Ali said: "Area around the Kaaba is sacred. Allah commands the Muslims to live as brothers. A Muslims is he who does not hurt anyone with his word or deed. Fear Allah in your dealings with other men. On the Day of Judgement you will have to answer for your dealings, even with animals. Obey Allah, the Almighty. Do not cast aside His commandments. Do good and keep away from evil."

Thus if we read the history of companions one would know, Ali (R) was indeed of a great personality. The fourth Caliph of Islam. We will also know how they respected each other. Unfortunately some later incidents of later genrations led to a split about Ali. Ahlu Sunna keeps at the place he deserves without insulting or degracing any other companions of the Prophet (PBUH). We can hope some great men like our brother 'Lawrance of Arabia' will emerge someday to unite us as one nation as Muslims despite our differances. (May Allah reward you the best)

Ali was a great man.

anyone who would read his history could tell that.

He was very spiritual and very compassionate.

he was the first child-boy who accepted Islam and that tells us he was extremely smart for his age.

He was the only man whos offspring carried the Prophets bloodline and the Prophet has been known to say many times that those who do not respect and love his family will not receive compassion from God.
