Can you tell from a 6-8 month old kitten what type of personality it will have?

I am thinking about adopting a kitten, but I'm afraid that I'll end up with a cat that will not be docile and affectionate. I don't want a cat that will be terribly energetic. Is there any way of telling what a kitten will be like? Maybe I should just get a full breed like a ragdoll that has certain personality characteristics?

I haven't had a kitten in 20 years. My last cat was 2 years old when I adopted her, so I knew that she was a sweet cuddle-muffin when I met her.

Thanks for any info and advice.

All kittens are full of energy and need lots of playtime to help burn it off. When they are 6-18 months, they are classed as adolescents. At this age, they have a heightened exploration of dominance, including challenging humans. Cats are not adults until they are 2 years, and by that age their personality is fairly fixed.

Would you consider adopting an older cat again? You'd have the benefit of knowing what personality they have and they will be calmer as they've already outgrown the "rebellious teenage" phase. You'd be doing an enormous favour to an older cat as they are very often over-looked at adoption centres.

Whatever you decide, good luck.

My first kitten had well developed personality when I got her at 14 weeks old. She was energetic and comical. Now she is almost 3 and much more calm. The worst thing about her is she is a Tonkinese and they are supposed to be very social. She is not. She's very shy around strangers. She will watch from a different room if someone comes over to visit. After two or three days of company staying at the house, she will finally warm up.So you can't really choose a cat by breed and expect a certain personality to apply. Also, my sister got a kitten that had a sweet personality but eventually the kitten grew up to be skittish and pee on things. Turns out she needed to be the only cat in the house. My sis had to finally rehome her. Right now I have a kitten that is 29 weeks old. I've had her for 17 weeks and her personality hasn't really changed much. Since she is only 6 months old, it's possible her personality will change but I'm not too worried about that. The only real difference I notice with her is she is a very dominate cat and supposedly she was non-dominate with her litter. Maybe she just needed her own space.

I would suggest going to a local shelter. Most usually have a room where you can sit with the cat for a while & get to know each other. When looking at the rows of cats, wiggle your fingers through the bars. If they smack at your fingers they'll probably be playful kitties. If they growl when they smack, or shrink up in a back corner, they're probably mean or fearful. If they just lay there & look at you like "yeah, whatever", you may have found a docile cat. Good luck!
