There are too many differences to list, but here are four big ones:

1. Airbus is made/assembled in Europe, Boeing in the USA
2. Boeing planes are higher quality, easier to repair and service, and built to every customer's demands. They are not a cookie cutter product.
3. The numbering system - all commercial Boeing planes so far start and end with a seven. eg. 707, 737, 787
4. Boeing designs are the future of air travel, as they are more environmentally friendly, safer and more efficient than Airbus models.

Boeing has a long history even before their first aircraft, The B&W built in 1926. They were successful in building military aircraft. Their first commercial mono-plane was launched in 1931.

They received Patents for the Model 247 in 1932. It was considered the first 'Modern Airliner and begin the third digit '7' indicating it was a commercial liner. An exception to the '7' rule was the Pan American Clippers 1936, sea planes designated Model 314. Their most well known early model was the B-17 Flying Fortress.

The next commercial success was the Stratoliner 307. Although the prototype crashed in 1939 they had delivered 10 307's to Pan Am by 1940. The famous B-29 Super Fortress rolled out in 1943.

In 1947 they released the 377 Stratocruiser with two decks and potential to have beds. With a ceiling of 33,000 ft it was their first commercial airliner since the Stratoliner 307 and based on the B-29's performance success.

Boeing concentrated on Military Aircraft and Jet Technology. The legend B-52 first flew in 1952 and is still flying!!

In 1955 Pan Am ordered 20, 707 and the Jet Liner became a reality. The 727 first flew in 1963 as Boeing's answer to small field commuter requirements.

In 1967 the 737 enhanced the 727's short haul cpabilities with Fan Jets and wide body, 6 seats per row. The REALLY WIDE body 747 first flew in 1969. Boeing had control of the Short and Long Haul Market.

The 757 (First flown in 1982) standard body 767 (First flown in 1981) and wide body, were well received and began Boeing's commitment to improved efficiency rather than increased size.

1995 saw delivery of Boeing's first all new design in more than a decade, the wide body, 777 fast, long range, fuel efficient and very comfortable for the passengers.

The 787 is all new and reflects Boeing's strategy that fuel efficient direct flights will be preferable to multiple hubs currently operating.

Airbus entered the market in 1970 with the Wide Body A300. They did not have to go through the learning curves Boeing has, begining with Bi-Planes. Their Aircraft are good. They introduced fly-by-wire which is arguably one of the technological improvements in aviation. Airbus has always had Fan-Jet Technology.

As a passenger if drew an Airbus, you knew you would have a comfortable flight. If you drew a Boeing it may be a 20 year old knee crusher. This was not Boeing's fault as it's the Airline that determines the leg room configuration.

Additionally Boeing is a conglomerate of several leading Aviation pioneers, Lockheed, McDonnell, Douglas and other lesser known. They have been involved in Rockets, Jet Fighters, the Stealth Bomber and the International Space Station.

Airbus is a consortium of French, German and British technology and finance.

There are more differences between two different Boeing models and between two different Airbus model than there could be between similar Airbus and Boeing models.

And despite what the chauvinistic and ill informed answerer (Matt !) above stated, the quality of those planes compares, as they all have to be certified by the other countries regulating agency.
In terms of operational economy, the difference is essentially due to the fact more modern planes are better than older design, since they benefited form the on going progress that occurs all the time.

Approximately one Atlantic ocean.

Boeing ("Forever New Frontiers") is American, 91 years old, with a fabulous heritage. Airbus SAS is an European consortium, formed in 1970 to handle the airliner competition from the American giants of those days. Both have their differences in designing and operating concepts, but put together they make the most of the world's airliners. Comparing these two will be suicidal in this forum because both companies have their supporters and this fued is going on a while now.

let me see how i can state this . Boeing has a design and keep using it and updating as time goes on. Airbus ,went around and got the best designs from , Boeing ,McDonald Douglass, Lockheed and used that to design there aircraft with there twist. Working airbus for some time and the other manufactures to , I saw to many times where they got the design.

Similar to the difference between a Toyota and a BMW. They are made by 2 different companies.

Airbuses like to crash into mountains.

Boeings like to crash into buildings.

Other than that there are some differences in window shape and the standard differences in manufacturing locations and quality control.
