when a stranger or someone you meet/talk the first time uses words of endearment to you, especially if it's the opposite sex? Instant messages like, "Hey, babe? How are you?".

Yes, I do. I think it's highly innappropriate and it shows the loser's character and what he really wants comes to the surface; a player, fast talker.

When a woman does it, like an older woman who is showing care towards me, I don't mind it so much because her intentions are those of endearment and caring about me.

A man is always a different story, esp. for attractive females. I find it outrageous and offensive when a man does this. He immediately becomes suspect having little control over his mouth and actions.

I don't really like it. I know local custom varies a lot when it comes to this; in the South, you'll find lots of people saying 'honey' to everyone, stranger or friend. But where I come from, it's used almost exclusively for *very* close friends and really small children... so that's what I grew up with... I know it's not intended that way when other people use it, so I don't really get offended... but it just sounds sickly sweet and sticky and icky all the same.

I think it's weird but... alot of the delivery guys that come to my store seem to like to call me things like sweet pea, sweetie, honey etc.. Not sure why. I just think it's a habit that they have. Sometimes I'll say something like I'm not your sweetie. And the next time they refrain.

I definitely don't like it, it offends me greatly to be so familiar immediately. I hate the word 'babe'

No, I don't get offended. I just make certain I avoid them after that. That is weird behavior. Some people don't realise there are boundaries.

Certain people can pull this off because they have a kind of ineffable charm. Most people sound like wankers, and nobody likes a ******.

I used to get offended. Now I just reply back in kind.

No,I was raised in the south, and we all use terms of endearment. Examples: Thanks sweetie or hon.
Hi darlin, sweetie,or hon

I would only get offended if it was something vulgar.

Too much familiarity from someone I just met makes me uncomfortable.
