Eat a small meal about an hour and a half before bed time. Sit a glass of water next to your bed, in case you find yourself thirsty and you won't have to get up to get a drink. Try drinking a nice warm cup of decafinated tea right before you lay down. Stay away from sugar, caffine, and other stimulants two hours before you lay down.
If this doesn't work, try taking two tylenol PMs a half-hour before bed for a week. Go off of them, and if your insomnia still persists, see a doctor. He can prescribe you a stronger medication to help you sleep, and get your internal clock set (so to speak) so that you can sleep after you go off of the meds.
The thing to remember is not to over-do it on sleeping medications. You could become immune to them, and to the pain relievers that generally come with them, and then you'd really be in a bad predicament.
Goodluck.

There isn't one simple way to do this. Here is a list of possible things to try. If you do resort to sleeping tablets, only use them for three days maximum, and try these suggestions as well, to keep you going thereafter. But most people can manage it with what I'm suggesting here.
External things: make sure your bed is comfortable, not sagging. Trying changing which way it faces – try at right angles to how it is now. If there is any noise around, use ear plugs, or try radio or music on headphones to drown out the rest. Get your room cool, with some ventilation. Go to bed only when you’re sleepy and get up if yo’re still awake after 30 minutes. Don’t use your bed for watching TV, talking on the phone etc.
Internal things: cut out or down on drugs and junk food. Alcohol is a disaster for sleep. Exercise regularly, do a relaxation exercise. If getting to sleep is the problem, eat a high carbohydrate meal 2 hours before bed; if staying asleep is the problem, have bread, biscuits or cereal at bedtime.
Your mind: stop doing anything demanding real concentration about 2 hours before bedtime and just hang out or listen to music etc. If something is bothering you, get help – eg if you’re always angry, you need to deal with it as bottled-up anger is a very common cause of problems and may be recognised. See a counsellor/psychotherapist. Depression may also be a cause of insomnia.
If all else fails: insomniacs have higher core body temperatures than others. Take 20 minutes vigorous exercise about 6 hours before bed, thus raising body temperature and metabolism. Your body ‘rebounds’ with a decrease 5-7 hours later. If you’re unable to do this, a long hot bath about 2-3 hours before bed has a similar effect.
PS - I should have said originally that this results from a good deal of research and following up theories and ideas from many other people/websites/books. And I'm very curious about why someone gives this a thumbs down!!

I have not been given much details about what you do but here are some common things that you could try instead of a pill (not good for the long run).
1.Use your bedroom to sleep ONLY. don't go into your bedroom unless it is neccessary (get stuff from drawers)....don't sit on the bed to read or watch TV or just hang around. if you have a TV in the bedroom then move it into another room.
2. wake up same time everyday EVEN WHEN YOU ARE NOT WORKING!!!
3.Go to bed the same time everyday + or - 30 minutes.
4. avoid sugar or caffeine as much as you can. If you live on coffee then don't drink it on the last 4 hours before your bed time.
there are loads more that you could do but all these things are just to help your body to adjust its clock. It takes time. Even if all those things are working for you don't expect to fall asleep straight away tonight. I will take at least 3 weeks!!!!
I trained myself from being a coffee junkie to the point where I don't need an alarm clock and I will wake up naturally the same time + or- 2 minutes. Scarry I know but it was just like that. nothing special but some commitment there. I gaurantee you it works. If you search around on the internet they will tell you exactly the same things. Your body has a clock and it is as accurate as any clock.

Do not watch TV or Read or exercise before bed. Do not eat. Have a nice cup of Herbal Tea, preferably Cammomile. Take some deep cleansing breaths. Get it completely dark in the room (put up room darkening shades, or cover your windows somehow). I slowly count backwards from 999, you will be suprised how fast you fall asleep, cause it's boring. Lay there for a while, if you do not fall asleep, get out of bed, out of your bedroom, go read something BORING, I read my husband's engineering books, cause I just don't understand them. Or I work on a mind numbing craft, like right now I'm crocheting an afghan, it doesn't take much thought and is rather boring. To really get myself tired, I read engineering books and crochet. Then get back to bed again. Don't start depending on drugs.

I used to have a difficult time sleeping as well, but decided that drugs were not an option. so i established a sleep routine. by doing the same thing every night your body learns that now its time to sleep. for instance, i had a shower, put on my pj's, made myself some warm milk, listened to augie march, read two chapters of a book then shut my eyes... took a little while but after the first week it worked brilliantly.

The best way I go to sleep is to not drink coffee after 4:00 PM (Or even earlier). Also no sugar or sweet foods such as juice, ice cream after 6:00. Next, do 30-45 minutes of exercise before you go to bed. Light pushups (3 sets as many as you can do comfortably) situps (3 sets same), jogging on one of those little exercise trampoline's (works awesome and doesn't hurt your knees!!!)
Next, don't go to sleep too early or too late. About 7-8 hours before you have to wake up. If you like to read, read a half hour in bed before lights out.
Try that and let me know how it works.

Insomnia (sleeplessness) is due to stress,
dietary and medical problems. By making
small lifestyle changes like having a fixed
daily routine, relaxing and eating properly,
insomnia can be cured. I found the information

Exercise during the day and keep active. Don't drink any caffeine including coffee, cokes, chocalate, etc. at least 4-5 hours before laying down.
Take a warm shower....masterbate....dry off and lay down --- NO TV .....just lay down after you get out.
That should work!

I often forget how to sleep, it seems.
Just lie down, and listen to music, do nothing else, but just actually Listen.
The different tones and inflections in the vocals, etc.
And drift off.
