Japanese is a language onto itself. So many of the answers compared it to Korean, not even close. One compared it to Hungarian. Wow! Korean and Hungarian are very close. There is a school of thought that the original Hungarians orignated in Korea. Korean, Hungarian and Finnish all have the same sounds that mean the same things. The written Japanese language is also onto itself. By the way, one of the great century long hatreds among people is that of the Japanese and the Koreans.

JJ and Alli say Korean and I think they are right. But there are only few difference. Their names and the "ng" thing.
Examples:
Korean: Ling-Yoon-Jin
Japanese: Riyuji
Korean: Kang Soyoung
Japanese: Karu Soyougi
Have you saw the difference?
The two languages are similar in words.
Examples:
English: kite
Korean: kyok
Japanese: kaito
But Japanese and Chinese language are not similar. Have you recognized? In Japanese language, you will hear too much consonants while you hear to much ching, chong, chang, shi, etc. in Chinese language. So, both are not similar.

Well, Japanese has a "subject-object-verb" sentence structure, unlike English that has "subject-verb-object" structure.
In addition to the ones already mentioned, I read Turkish has the same sentence structure. I'm not sure if there are any more similarities.

Okinawan is closely related to Japanese (about the only language that is related genetically at all to Japanese), so I guess that Okinawan would be most similar in all respects to Japanese.
