Well, personally if u ask me no.4 sucks but amongst the first 3, hitler was the closest to conquering the world yet nobody could kill him, secondly whatever he did, he sacrifised for his country unlike others, so Hitler's the one I choose, what about you?

The Duke of Marlborough. Hands down. He ran roughshod over multiple enemies in multiple wars in some of the most stellar campaigns ever recorded in history.
Unlike some leaders above, he was NEVER defeated, although due to politics, he was never given the honor he deserved.

Alex the Great - rocked the world, but that was ancient history.
Napoleon - Twice defeated, deposed and captured.
Hitler - Preferred the advice of "yes men" like Keitel, ignoring his greatest genius, Rommel.
GW Bush - Undefeated in war, ( 2 for 2 ) but never faced a real challenging conventional military obstacle. Also, his inept adaptation to this new, asymmetrical threat leaves doubt in my mind as to his martial legacy.

Honorable Mention: MacArthur's Korean campaign, including the surprise landing at Inchon is one of the greatest martial feats in two millennia. Sadly, his tragic miscalculation of China's intervention prevents him from being the greatest on any list. At least Truman should have let him finish what he started. Maybe there would be no North Korea today.

JFK, he prevented the US from going into nuclear war,or CAPT. SAVAGE of WW II! JFK was the only CATHOLIC and a Democrat! Capt. Savage was a fictitious character that was created on paper by a number US Army pay clerks. They were receiving his pay and entitlements through out the war. He was listed as participating in every major battle of the war, and he was wounded repeatedly. He received many awards and medals during his short lifetime. At the end he was listed as MIA and the clerks received his death benefit as well. He was promoted regularly and at the end he was listed as a full colonel. They did not discover this ruse until all of the clerks were already discharged! They got away with it. This is why the Army separated the payroll division from the personnel division although it has since been restored and therefore you can expect the same thing to occur again!

This Q is subjective,as the definition of "war leader" can mean different levels of leadership.
I will assume you are speaking militarily.

#1.Ghengis Kahn
#2.George S. Patton
#3.Smedley Butler (USMC 2 time Medal of Honor recipient).

Political leaders are generally described to be 'statesmen' but there hasn't been a true critter in decades.
#1. George Washington
#2.Winston Churchill
#3.James K. Polk (10th president).

It's a limited list, although my personal choice is there...

Greatest War leader means a winner in the end to me. That eliminates both Napoleon and Hitler.

President Bush has yet to lose (no thanks to the Democrats) so he's a situational no-pick...

That leaves Alexander the Great who IMO was the greatest War leader since he conquered what was for him the entire known world. He was never defeated in battle --

You missed out Winston Churchill who was the greatest war leader of all time and the only with enough guts to go after Hitler even though his country payed a very heavy price.

hitler are you kidding?

set aside he was crazy. he made many many military mistakes. a lot of the countries he conqured we no milarty feat. he attacked russia wich was a mistake he overstreatched his military to fight a super power that was not a threat to him at the time. he was the person who made the decision to defend the wrong place during D Day. his generals had advised to defend narmandy but hitler had them keep their people in place. Romel on numerous ocasions tried to get hitler to go one way in battles only to be overridden by hitler only to be devistated in those battles.

the only thing hitler had going for him was a country that salivated at the thought of war and hench men to kill those who disagreed with them.

If loss of troops at any level is acceptable then its amazing what you can do in battle.

rethink your choice with facts and give people some real comanders to choose from.

I can think of 50 that were better than any of the choices you gave us. cornwallis was a great tactition. as was washington, patton, hanibal, skippio...are just a few

What about Churchill and David Lloyd George. What about Nelson and Wellington.

Hitler made the biggest blunders of any war leader =
Invading Russia
Very poor use of his surface fleet.
restricting the development of the jet aircraft

It was his men who got him through.

Hitler, huh? You had better be crackin' them history books, Tex! Nobody tries to invade Russia in the winter! He was a buffoon, a megalomaniac and he didn't listen to his generals!

He was also a delusional coward who died in a hole.

I don't see Attila the Hun on your list. Or Julius Caesar? Yet you include GWB in the mix.

Sigh
