... what are you talking about? Not all chefs are men. What about Rachael Ray, Giada De Laurentiis, Ina Garten, Sandra Lee, Robin Miller, and Sara Moulton?

Drop the sexist views, buddy.

Well of course there are some women chefs. However, traditionally women have been the better home cooks and men have been actual Chefs.

There reason for this is because of the pressure. A lot of women can not bear this kind of pressure. Also, comercial cooking is a lot harder physically. You may need to be on your feet for 14 hours at a time, you may need to lift very heavy items etc. I am not saying women can not do these things I just feel like men are better at toughing it out so to speak.

Also, for better or worse most comercial kitchens are a very "macho" environment. Lots of cussing, lots of drinking (both off AND on duty) lots of off color jokes etc. This environment is not "friendly" towards woman.

I am a former chef and I have seen the intense pressure of commercial cooking and I have seen women (and yes some men!) crack under pressure. I remeber working with a new female line cook and things were ok at first but when it got super chaotic and we got slammed the woman literally went home crying! It takes a real "macho" guy to take that kind of pressure. Some men can't take it either but even fewer women can.

I am NOT trying to be sexist here just telling you the truth. There are many things that women are good at and men aren't and vice versa.

Hahaa really good question. As most of the ppl said in our culture its been ladies who does the house duties and how many men u see cooking when they home. Also its not just the food, when its a lady the food taste different cause of ya affection towards them(could me a mum or wife or sumthing else). Cuming to the business world, in my experiance i worked with a lotta lady chefs, only few are good but consider this working in a kitchen is a physical challenge, working in da haet, carrying heavy stuff moving real quick, which are few things women are not so good and dont even need to mention the Language we use in kitchens...lol. But lately women are really doing good in chefing, cause when the time cums to bring the high quality food, u need work in a nice, neet , tidy and orgganised sumthing women really good @(not always) and now a days most of the competitions started taken over by women too. Iam a victim myself...lol. Sum cultures also belive that a man's palm have a more flavour than women, for example a SUSHI believed to be only made my men. One more thing women is also a centre of distraction in a kitchen....all da best with ya search

First, NOT all chef's are men.

Second, there is no proven reason why one should claim they are better than the other in the kitchen.

It is all, as this question indicates, about stereotyping and sweeping inaccurate generalisations.

One possible reason may be because traditional home cooks are women as it is women who stay at home (in past generations, not so much now) to cook, keep home and care for children and elderly. To go outside the home to work and bring home earnings was traditionally the role of the male in the household, even if that included making a living as a chef.

People need to stop stereotyping and let people just be people and shine at their very best, no matter what that may be.

Peace

it is a myth that ladies are better cooks. If u learn propely and under proper guidacne both men and women can be good cooks. men can be very good cooks too . Being a chef in the hotel industry is some other ball game. It is long hours and a tough job which is mostly taken up by men, but recently women too have started working as chefs in hotel industy. Both MEN AND WOMEN are equally good cooks if they have a interest in cooking. I cook about once ina month or so and my food is appreciated both by my wife and daughter (women )

They're not all male. There are female chef's around too, just fewer.

It's not phenomena that there are more males then females working in any industry. There are simply fewer women in the workforce then men.

The food and beverage industry is the norm rather than the exception.

Just because there are more male chefs doesn't make men better at cooking. Likewise, fewer female Ceo's then male, don't make women any worse at managing a company.

Social norms NOT SKILLS are what create the discrepency.

Well, first off I truly believe all that any of the chefs here say...

First of all compare the #s of men vs women in each discipline of the culinary arts and i'm sure you can figure the answer out without any types of prejudices.

Executive Chefs
Sous Chefs
Expediters
Chef de Partie
Pastry Chefs
Sommeliers
Caterers
Bakers

Also ask yourself how many of each sex is a head chef at a michelin starred restaurant. I know of one myself who works under Gordon Ramsay.

I work in a in an industry just as hectic as the restaurant biz if not more...and I know that most people to be disfunctional and masochistic in order to work in it. I just like the challenge.

What a bunch of sexist people. More men are chefs, because of the same reason, more men are astronauts, pilots and on and on. We were held back, having babies and taking care of our man and the family for years. So, were a little behind, but, that doesn't make any male chef better then women chefs.

Not true many of the top chefs in the world are women to like Kylie Kwong from Australia,Nigella Lawson from the U.Kk,Ritu Dalmia from india,so the list goes on its completely baseless to say that there are no woman chefs.

Chefs and people who cook for big crowd r men becoz its cooked in large quantity and it certainly involves some muscle work.
As far as indian cooking is concerned women can't handle those big vessels and heavy spatula's.
