wow. was ol' roy ever good? no it isn't. it's crap food. your dog loves it sure. i love cheesecake. should i eat cheesecake non stop, no. should your dog ever eat ol'roy NO!!!!!!! this is probably the worst food there is for dogs. i wouldn't feed it to a stray that was dying of hunger and that was all i had to offer it. it's full of fillers and by products. your dog would get more nutrients from licking the bottom of your shoes. now i'm concerned because you say money for dog food isn't an option, but yet you say pedigree is expensive? where do you live, where i do, pedigree is $2 more than ol'roy. pedrigree isn't the best food option out there either that's for sure. you have a large breed puppy on your hands. almost a full grown adult dog. find a premium brand of dog food. you're going to have to leave the walmart isle and go to a pet store. my dog's do well on purina pro plan, and purina one is close enough to the same where if you run out you can return to walmart and pick up a small bag should you need to. there are many different options. check out the premium brands at a petstore. when switching your dog over to a new food it should be done slowly as to not upset their digestive system. but since your poor dog is eating ol'roy i would speed it up a bit. mix in a small amount of the new food in with the crap you're feeding. then over a week's time make the new food the majority in the bowl and the old is just a small amount. then stop feeding the crappy ol'roy. you are honestly killing your dog slowly with this food. whatever's left in the bag throw away. no animal needs to eat this. yes your neighbor's dog may live a long healthy life. but that's rare. and it's my experience with ol'roy feeders that the dog really isn't that healthy. the type of person who feeds this food often does not keep their dog up on veterinary exams and only thinks it's healthy, when actually the dog is not. or would have lived a longer healthier life if it had been fed even a food that was $2 more a bag. you need to be feeding a large breed food also, since you have a large breed dog. this has added ingrediants that help keep a large breed dog's bones and joints healthy. i'm glad you're trying to do what's best for your dog. and what's best is not to feed the dog ol'roy. pedigree is 10 times better. better to go back to that than stay with the crap. and of course your dog runs everytime you open the bag. i would come running if you opened a cheesecake package too!!!!!!

Ol Roy is and always has been a very low quality food that has been recalled for good reason time after time...not just in the recent pet food recalls either. Pedigree isn't much better. Do a search on the net and take a look at the "premium" pet foods out there which will make a HUGE difference insofar as the health and well being of your dog. Look for brands like Canidae, EVO, Innova. I think in your search you'll find that human grade foods like this equate to fewer vet bills and a healthier pet!! Good luck!

Do NOT feed Ole'Roy!!! it is the absolute bottom of the barrel, low quality food. It is like feeding your dog gravy and fat soaked sawdust.

Store brand foods like Pedigree, Purina, Science Diet, IAMS/Eukanuba are low quality too but are better then Ole'Roy... dogs eat the "gross" stuff readily because it is sprayed with fats & flavor enhancers to make it more appealing ot them.

You really need to get your dog on to a good quality food such as Canidae, Chicken Soup, Wellness, Merrick, Fromm just to name a few. They cost a little more then store brands but they don't have all the cheap fillers & flavor enhancers or the by products. They are better processed by your dog. It takes up to 3 times more of a low quality food for a dog to get proper nutrition then it does of a good quality meat based food.

I know I may be stepping on some toes here (Sorry Chetco) , but I was stuck one night and had to get Walmart food for my babies. I spent over 1 hour checking ingredients and I found Purina Pro Plan to be high in meat and proteins. The first 3 ingredients are meats and brewers rice. Plus the benefit is that my dogs like it better than the Innova I was feeding them

Ol Roy is THE worst dog food out there. Sorry, but that is truth.
It ought to be illegal! It causes cancer, among other illnesses
It actually cost LESS to feed the premium kibbles, from a pet supply shop. Dogs eat about 1/2 as much, so it lasts twice as long. In tests, it cost 23% less to feed Canidae, Innova or Wellness than Purina or Pedegree. That is because you aren't paying for fillers (poop) by the pound.

While it's not the best,I know a lot of people who feed it,and their dogs seem fine. And,some dogs are what you call,"easy keepers," that is,they thrive on almost any kind of dog food.I remember when I was a kid,a nobody thought a whole lot about what they fed their dogs. The dogs would get cheap ,dry food and table scraps, and they lived to be 13,14 or 15 years old. So,if your dog looks and feels good,I wouldn't worry.I would try the Old Roy Lamb and Rice, though;I think it has more meat in it,and maybe add some canned to the dry,to make sure he's getting enough protein.Another dog food you might want to try that's not expensive, and is similar to Pedigree,is Dad's Meal.My dogs used to eat that all the time, and a friend of mine who works for a vet feeds it to her dogs,so it must be OK.

It's not an expensive dog food. But, look at the ingredients. Compare them to what you were feeding him. You may want to go to just Purina Dog Chow. It is reasonable and has good ingredients. But, so may the one you want to feed him. Make sure he's getting his needed nutrients.

The Ol'Roy foods that were recalled were only wet foods. If you want to feed your dog Ol' Roy go for it!
