Personally, I think 8 glasses (64 oz or about 2 liters) of water per day is slightly excessive. The number is based on a study that found that much water was required to digest food. The problem with that number is that food contains water already, so you don't have to drink that much. Now, if you're training for something and you're very physically active, then it's different. But if you have a sedentary lifestyle then 64 oz is excessive. Good night!

You've had lots of good answers so far. The human body is about 2/3 water, and quite a bit of that gets used in circulation and filtration processes, so to keep working, that water has to be replaced. I've also heard that extra water is good if you're trying to lose weight, because it can help flush out the waste in fat cells. Don't know if that's true or not, but I know water fills the belly when it wants a snack.

Here's the thing - those 8 glasses are just a rough estimate. A person uses about 1/2 an ounce of water per pound of body weight each day. So those 64 ounces you hear about are perfect, if you weigh 128 pounds. And of course, if you live in a dry climate or do things that make you sweat much, you actually need more water to stay hydrated.

I'm in Arizona. Last month, our high temperatures were around 115. I had to do some remodeling in a rental property with no air conditioning. As a result of dehydration, I made myself sick. I had shakes for about three days after I was done. I had nausea, vomiting and diarrhea for about a week. And I had some freaky visual hallucinations for over a week. It could have been worse, because without enough water to keep the body sweating and cool, I could've had heat stroke and died, or at least ended up in the hospital. All this, and I'm aware of the need for water and always drink at least the minimum each day.

Many people answering claim that you don't need to drink 8 glasses of water per day, and that's true, you won't die if you don't, however

If you want to have beautiful skin and maintain your youthful looks the answer is, drink lots of water. (actually 1/2 your body weight in fluid ounces per day)

If you would like your organs to function well, then eat quality foods and drink plenty of fluids.

If you prefer that your brain function at maximum capacity, the answer, quality diet and plenty of fluids

If you want to maintain you optimum weight, drinking plenty of fluids each day will help you.

However, if you don't care about any of the above........oh, didn't mention, if you want healthy joints, fluids are the answer AGAIN, but if you don't care about any of these things then just ignore the rules about drinking water each day and dehyrate your body (including your brain) and over the years watch and see what happens.
