Good thing I read the rest of the question, your boyfriend will meet the weight limit but may wish that he did not have to lose, they will work him to get him into shape (for his own good).
I had the opposite problem, I wanted to join the Airborne division but only weighed 115 pounds and was only 5' 2'. I was a late grower, when I got out of the service I was 5 ' 8" and weighed 135 pounds, instead of jumping out of airplanes, I was a radio repairman, they had one of the shorter life expectancies in Vietnam.
By the way, tell you boyfriend that I said, THANK YOU

Depending on whether he passes his initial physical test, which is really easy, (3 pull ups, 40 sit ups, 13:30 on the 1.5 mile) he'll get sent to a regular platoon. If he fails the IST, he'll get sent to Physical Conditioning Platoon, where he won't undergo any Marine training, rather he'll undergo nothing but physical training and dieting until he passes IST.
If he's over the weight limit though, he will have a difficult time in boot. If he ships tomorrow he'll arrive and do in processing for the next week. Then he'll be off to his platoon (or PCP) for another week. At the end of that week, he should be able to write you and give you an address for him, give him as much encouragment as you can. The first 3 weeks are the hardest 3 weeks. They seem like years, but the weight will drop like nobody's business. I went in at 6'4" 215 and came out at 165.

If his weight was that close to the limit, he's going to lose enough weight to meet the requirements as he works through boot camp. Good night!

If he is overweight when he arrives at boot camp, they will put him in a special unit where they will 'dog' the hell out of him until he meets the requirement. He will run, do push ups, sit ups, etc day and night until he slims down enough to join a new platoon and head off to basic.

It is easy to gain weight back in Boot Camp, with all the strength training! I don't think they'll reject him at this point!

He will be treated as a hold over. In other words he will still get to go to basic, but not until they work some of the weight off of him. He will stay at reception until he drops weight and then he will go to boot camp.

he'll just get worked harder. If he isn't where he needs to be by the end of boot camp then he'll be gone. At least that's how it was when I went through.
Af? Marines? Army? Navy? They all do it differently

Based on my observations when I was in boot camp (MCRD San Diego) he'll be kept in his platoon but put on diet. The DI will tell him to diet and he'll have to supervise himself - they'll be watching (DIs eat with the recruits).
If he's both overweight and physically weak (as in can't do pull-ups or run drops etc...) he'll be sent to PCP for a crash course in physical fitness.

Loosing some weight before the bootcamp is alright because he is gonna gain it anyway after the big loads of the excersice. Say Congratulations to your boyfriend for taking the next step to protect our country and community.
Thank You.

He will lose all of the weight he needs to in a very short time. No worries.
