Did you know this about it?

"7. In the West, the concept of jihad has been improperly translated as 'holy war.' Instead, jihad means 'struggle' and refers, in particular, to the personal struggle that every Muslim engages in to live a peaceful and good life."

We know very well that in every language certain words may have many different meanings depending on its usage. Struggle can be in your mind, in your own life, in your work, in your way to office with the traffic, or struggle may be fighting with the enemy.
Historically, Jihad means Holly War.
For 1400 years, Muslims always understood the meaning of Jihad as Islamic Holy War. Every Islamic scholar, will agree with this meaning of Jihad. Technically, Jihad is war against non-Muslims (disbeliever; hypocrites) only, since Muslims are forbidden to fight the Muslims.

In the Islamic history, more than 80% of the texts are filled with Holy War.

If you want to give Jihad a new twisted meaning, a politically correct one, then you better first change the Qur’an, Hadiths and all those Islamic history books available in the library throughout the world.

The real meaning is internal struggle, the inner Jihad is no different thing then these sayings within the bible,

“But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment” (Matt 12:36 KJV).

"If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one's religion is useless" (James 1:26 NKJ).

“…take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (2 Cor 10:5 NIV).

“…bridle the whole body” (James 3:2 KJV).

“…beat my body and make it my slave...” (1 Cor 9:27 NIV)

“Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature” (Col 3:5 NIV)

This is the internal struggle to become harmonious within by overcoming the divisions within ourselves, refining our lower animal natures and gaining mastery over it. But please do not blame the Americans for their interpretation, the carnal Muslims who are the radical ignorant kind present their Jihad externally towards their fellow human brothers, instead of within themselves. This carnal actions is the same as the Jews who once did animal sacrifices when the sacrifice that was asked for was their own lower animal nature, such a sacrifice is the command to be pure and whole.

The 'real' meaning is the one that exists in reality - and today the reality is the word means something different to what you've written.

The inability of the Islamic nation to stop the militarisitc radicialization of Islam means that the word 'Jihad' actually now exists in a way that is different from what you were taught to believe. Sounds like your religion is being destroyed from the inside, so dont blame the west for the actions of the radical Islamists.

Yes, it is our "effort" to overcome our faults and errors and become better people and it can refer to something quite small, like speaking softly and nicely to one's parents, for example.
Thanks for asking this question, hope many non-Muslims read the answer and try to understand us better.
Blessings to everyone!

It is what you think it is, there are many versions of Jihad and all authorities agree that there is a requirement to defend the faith from outsiders.
