My cats are well fed and well cared for. Why do they "meow" when I go to the kitchen?

Cats meow for various reasons. They may be trying to get your attention when you go to the kitchen. "Hey, we're here -- how about a snack?" Or it could be a greeting. When I say my cat's name she meows back at me. I have also heard her walking around making noises like she's mumbling to herself. I've got another cat that was several years old before he meowed at all. Some cats are just more vocal than others. I think a cat that meows is neat. However, some of the oriental breeds would drive me up the wall by meowing too much.

I had a cat that even after being fed, would meow just for more. Yep, she was overweight too. They are smart.
