Don't give up so easily on the Old Testament! I heard a guy once say that if you want to work on your relationship with God, read Psalms; if you want to work on your relationship with your fellow man, read Proverbs. I think he's right!
Nevertheless, if you're bent on going to the New Testament, one of my favorite books is James. It's not too long, and will surely give you a quick adjustment and boost to further your bible studies. Aside from that, any of Paul's writings are great to read. Paul was a brilliant, faithful man with a good grasp on God's thinking on matters. He has penned more bible books than anyone else, and for good reason!

Dont write off the old testament just yet. The book of Psalms is really good inspiration, as King David and the others all had such a wide range of emotions while writing. there is something in there for nearly everyone and any situation. in the NT, i reccomend the Book of John. it portrays Jesus in a different way than the other three, but in a good way. Romans and Corinthians are really good as well.

The book of John is good. Also Romans. Try the Psalms, too, and maybe a chapter of Proverbs a day. Don't get discouraged. What version do you read? Try getting a version in modern English, like the New Living Translation. That will be easier and more interesting to read.

I got a 365 day Bible by Max Lucado...If you start on the day lets say July 28th...by next July 28th you will have read the whole Bible..
It breaks it up into some Old. test, Psalms, Proverbs, and New Test..
Even though it doesn't seem like it, there are some O.T. verses that can still really relate to our lives.

I would suggest reading a bible that has Jesus's words in red print. Then, read what Jesus said and try to understand exactly what he was trying to teach his followers and critics. Other reading in the old and new testaments is also very informative when trying to understand the cultures of the ancient world. Everthing in the bible, however, points to Jesus, so you might as well try to understand what he was saying.

Genesis is a good place to start because it's the first book in the bible and it's my favorite. It has the creation, Adam & Eve, Cain & Abel, Noah's Flood, the Tower of Babel. Genesis, in my opinion, is the best.

well, if you read it from beginning to end, you will see there is some pretty absurd stuff in there and that there are many contradictions from one part to another in the bible. I would recommend not to jump around, but read it all the way through like you would any book, and you will see the stuff it says often goes against what was said earlier. and why not the old testament? it is all supposed to be gods word, just so happens in the old testament he loved to kill and punish people.
wow, look at all the thumbs down I got for saying read the bible from the start to finish, wonder why that is...

The gospel according to John might be good. Also, if you want some more practical OT stuff, try Ecclesiastes or Proverbs.

Romans has alot of practical applications. John is good for what ails you spiritually. Psalms gets you in the mood for worship. Proverbs gets you in the mood to parent (my inspiration, personally).
