My nephew, a first born, took his first steps on the day of his birthday party. But he was actually 13 months old the day of the party. My dad, sister, and I sat in a triangle in the living room and would give him a sip of cold coffee (which he loves!) every time he walked to us. It was so cute!

My son was 10 mos, but that is early. Most girls are early and boys tend to be 1 or after on average. As long as the pediatrcian doesn't see any problems, I would say don't worry about it!
