Your dog is making his bed safe. When dogs were still in the wild they would scratch and dig to secure a safe place to sleep, free from snakes and such. This is normal---Blessings!

dogs dig their bed to make it more comfortable, if he lies down in the spot he digs then that's all it is. He could be smelling something in the sofa, or he lost a treat or a toy down there or something.
certain dogs dig on the sofa and pull pillows apart, there is a breed that does this...Akita...I think. Hunting dogs, killing the prey/the pillow.

Looking for food that may have droped between the couch cushions,Maybe. Do you eat on the couch sometimes or have you gave your dog a bone or a toy on or around the couch? I know i have before and my dog will search for whatever it was i gave it if he has dropped it, or even if they smell were food has been, they will dig and look for it, even if theres nothing there. they still smell something!!! So i'd say that he/she is looking for something !

The dog is 'making his bed'. Just throw a small blanket over his favourite part of the couch to sleep on. He will scratch the blanket around until he can lie on it comfortably. Dogs expect to sleep on lumpy surfaces. He's telling you that your couch is not lumpy enough for him. Once he gets his blanket lumped up just right, he will lie down and go to sleep. In the process you keep him from ruining the couch with his scratching.

maybe he has his toys there?ussually when my does its because his ball is under the sofa so he tries to scratch the sofas leg.but i would say because it smells or is looking for something.or maybe just feels the need to dig.

It is making a "nest" to get comfy. All three of my dogs do it.
