What is the single best argument for or against God, repectively, that you have come across?

aussie: Those weren't really arguments, they were just claims about the Bible. Claims that I have heard refuted soundly on more than a few occasions by the way. The point of this was to get people to talk about valid points that the other side might have.

The Bible is the most bastardised book in history, pieces added for special effects.. Bits deleted as they won't attract the people's devotion if that is left in...
This book is a total fabrication, written by MEN not some God sitting on his throne surrounded by Angels...
There are thousands of examples of where the Bible originally derived from, and they all have their roots in Paganism, yes the events depicted in the Bible can be found in much earlier Pagan Cultures ...

How's this in New Guinea, the missionaries had to change the wording from ~~the lamb of God, to ~~the pig of God....
Why ???~~~ The natives don't know what sheep are as they are are pig herders...ROFLMAO...

The Universe is multidimensional, and we are but a small part of it, we are 3rd dimensional beings, get real we are almost at the bottom of the scale....
Very soon we will start to evolve into the 5th dimension, and all of the religious beliefs you hold so dear will mean nothing... They will all soon be Ancient History....
Blessed Be... )O(

The Bible easily qualifies as the only book in which God's revelation is contained. There are many bibles of different religions; there is Mohammedan Koran, the Buddhist Canon of Sacred Scripture, the Zoroastrian Zendavesta, and the Brahman Vedas. All of these have been made accessible to us by; reliable translations, and we may judge of their value. It is soon discovered that all these non[ Christian Bibles are all developments in the wrong direction. They all begin with some flashes of true light, and end in utter darkness. Even the most casual observer soon discovers that the Bible is radically different. It is the only Book that offers man a redemption and points the way out of the dilemmas. That is my support for God.

I will try to respond to both sides.

For:
The whole question of where did the Universe come from. Once all the particles were here, we know the followed the simple laws of physics and after 18 billion years or so of cosmic and biological evolution we eventually have at least one planet that sustains life complicated enough to ponder its own existence.

But where did the particles come from in the first place?

[Well, of course scientists don't have the answer to this yet. So this is in many respects a "God of the gaps" argument. Interestingly, believers often talk about the virtues being humble but are quick to say they have the answer here while our best scientists say they do not have one yet.]

For #2:
I have found over and over again with people that what makes the strongest believers is PERSONAL EXERIENCE. That is, they saw God (as many Mormons, Hindus, and Buddhists have told me). Many Christians say they have felt the Holy Spirit. Once most people have had this experience, it is more real for them than anything else of this earth and NOTHING will convince them otherwise.

[Of course the problem lies in the fact that these people always see or here different Gods and it always seems to be the one of their particular culture. So what can we make of it? Does it mean that all these Gods do exist, or that our brains have a propensity to have experiences and interpret them to our understanding?]

Those above are the best reasons I've herd so far for the existence of God. I don't have the answers to them (though I think the 2nd is most likely to be an effect of the mind).

AGAINST:
The simple reason is "lack of evidence." For every reason I've herd believers give, there seem to be better (more probable) counter-explanations. I do not believe space aliens have ever visited the Earth because of a lack of evidence. I do not believe in witches, fairies, levitation, ghosts, astrology, etc. because of a lack of evidence.

Our human minds are very good at making up stories and explanations for things we don't understand (that has helped us to survive) but it doesn’t make those things true.

God makes His own arguments with and within the Bible. In one place it says in effect ... LOOK AROUND YOU. Do you SERIOUSLY think that all this just happened? Everything that we (including science) know about the earth, the atmosphere, space, galaxies, and life--EVERYTHING!!!--has a design to it. Look at the human body as but one teeny tiny example of what I'm talking about. The brain is too complex to be understood, but CLEARLY has a design to it. A design BY THE WAY that includes being "wired" in such a way as to predispose us to worship a higher power. THAT is a conclusion from science! For all those who worship science and not God, think about that! The eye has a intricate and complex design that many have called an engineering marvel. Starting at the mouth we see the beginnings of the digestive system from the teeth to chew to the saliva to soften to the muscles of the tongue and throat to swallow all the way down to the stomach and through the body. Do you not marvel? Well, how about the circulatory system? The pulminary system? The skeletal system? And on. That's JUST humans! Look how ants aerate and till the soil. Look how fires actually replenish and revitalize forests. Look how wind, dust, sun, and water all work beautifully together to make rain and snow, as part of the water cycle. Did you know that if ANY one of those ingredients were missing that life would cease to exist? Look how the earth is tilted on its axis. PERFECT! How it rotates at just the right speed. Again, PERFECT! How it's orbit is masterfully controlled. AGAIN PERFECT! The more science discovers about the way it ALL works so beautifully together the more we see that to atheists ... it was one cosmic LUCKY day for humanity. And for Christians ... it is a testiment to God's awesome power.

But maybe the most beautiful testimony of all is DNA. One FORMER evolutionary scientist came to believe in God AFTER studying DNA. He said something to the effect that: Once you understand the mind-boggling complexity of DNA, NO ONE could reasonably conclude that it just happened by chance or luck. It had to be by design, because it has such an awesome design. The building blocks of life were constructed.

Deny God if you want, but you deny into the face of overwhelming evidence. And by the way ... there CANNOT be good evidence that God doesn't exist, since He does.

How did the Earth get into the universe? Really, ok, where did the universe come from? Mmmhmm, yes, are we just floating in some sort of galactic tube? Yes, well, how did that get there? There has to be a creator, God perhaps, who created everything: the universe did not just appear by itself. I believe in God; not the God of the Bible, but a genderless Creator who established all life everywhere at some point in the undocumented past.

Jesus was a Jew, rejected by his own people. The Bible was written by man, many years after the alleged occurrences. Old men at that. As well, it has been altered by many other men through time to manipulate the meanings to their own ends.
Sheep indeed.

Where there is a lack of evidence, the logical choice is the null position (no belief). If someone came to you and said that purple unicorns with silver horns were real, you wouldn't believe them would you? You would ask for evidence. If the evidence was a story book and the gut feeling of the believer, you would conclude that there were no such things as purple unicorns with silver horns.

No argument against God is necessary since there is no valid argument for.

There is no good argument, but if you are asking, what is it that people say against God most, it is that they always say" If there is a God, then why is there so much suffering in the world?'
When we make those bad choices , that lead to those bad consequences !!! When are people going to understand , that there are laws, that we simply cannot brake.
"Whatever a man sows, he shall also reap"
That is so simple to understand .......
